Poverty and New York street smarts produced a self-deprecating humor that never left. The G.I. Bill let him study acting and by 1951 he earned a New York Drama Critics Award. Television dramas followed and then came Hollywood. When director Billy Wilder cast him opposite Jack Lemmon, a classic partnership was created. In Lemmon, Matthau found an enduring friend and frequent co-star. Matthauβs real-life combination of cynicism and gruff sentimentality was reflected in the performances that brought him to major stardom.
Two-time Academy Award winner, Matthauβs fifty years of show business have earned him the love of millions and the admiration of fellow professionals. Clips used include: A Face in the Crowd, Charade, The Fortune Cookie, The Odd Couple, Cactus Flower, The Sunshine Boys, Hopscotch, Grumpy Old Men and Iβm Not Rappaport. In addition to Walter Matthau himself, on-screen interviewees include actors Jack Lemmon, Julie Harris, Ozzie Davis and Roddy McDowell, directors Herbert Ross, Edward Dmytryk, writer Neil Simon and Walterβs son, director Charles Matthau.
Dour…not door
No one could do his parts as well. Unique and yet appealing to the average American.
The son looks like Anthony Perkins πΊπ»
Loved this man …….ENTER…haha…from the old boys
His son looks like a young Tony Perkins.
Heβs Not A Was Yet Heβs Still Is From His Magic
ForAt Least20Years October First Is Always Walter Matthau Day Join Us Remembering The Lifelong Joy He Brings Itβs The Least I Could Do
HIe remains to this day one of my favourite American actors.
Did Walter’s wife know Anthony Perkins?
I guess Hello, Dolly! never happened.
They went together very well.
The sadness that’s in his eyes really says a lot about his sense of humor.
One of my most favorite actors along with JL. Both our mom’s were named Rose and worked as seamstresses; my mom was a few years younger than WM. He was about the same age as my mom’s brother, who looked like WM. We would have been on welfare, as well and living place to place if my mom’s dad hadn’t bought a railroad style apartment house soon after he arrived from Italy for his kids to live in when needed, which when we left my dad when I was 8 because of domestic violence we did need. My grandfather sold coal and ice and apparently saved up money to buy that 6-unit apartment house in the inner city where we lived.
Fabulous actor. Significant that they didn’t mention Hello Dolly, a film in which he didn’t get along with Streisand… surprise, surprise.
Good
But how greedy can you get with the advertisements . Almost like watching a program on AMC OR TBS
I π π π walter
Nice video bio on Walter Matthau. He was also great in "A Guide For the Married Man" (1967). I only wish the video covered that movie a little.
I searched for this video this morning I felt like I needed a boost to my spirit and I remember this bio a diamond in the rough discovering Walter Matthau’s God given talent and heart. There is just something about some of these older gentleman like Jack Lemmon Walter Matthau Paul Newman Robert Redford Gregory Peck Clark Gable Kirk Douglas Omar Sharif and probably a few more than I just cannot think of right now but gurnick my admiration respect and very easy on the eyes! Not every Star has a class of the gentleman that I just mentioned
Walter was one of the great ones.
2mins 30 seconds beteween ads thats nuts
A few 1000 years we’ll be alright? I wish I had that confidence.
They all made Hollywood what it is today, that’s my problem
The real quite American β¦.πβ¦ his rise to fame and fortune mirrors Michael Caine
Walter was nothing short of perfect in Pelham 123.
One of my favorite actors…
Him and probably James Cagney, AWESOME!!!!!
My fav. The movies he was in was with Jack Lemmon…Grumpy Old Men.. I’m guessing his son looked like the mother. Looks like Anthony Perkins….wow. RIP
First time I saw him was in Bad News Bears when I was 9. After that he was always Buttermaker no matter what he did, and always great. Something about him right at the start pulling in the ballfield parking lot, cracking open a beer, pouring some out to put in a splash of Jim Beam, taking a sip, grabs a tiparillo, looks for a light, and then a zippo popps out of nowhere and its a 12 year old kid giving him a light. And he just says, "Thanks Mister".
Good Guy bad guy he could play anything.
Jack Lemon such a kind charming man β

The Cuteness
After seeing this bio of Walter Matthau my heart thrust open some tears. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed listening to his peers and Friends talk about him. I’m not surprised but I was overjoyed that they exalted him because he has been through a lot of these beginnings and he aspired 2 develop his highest creative potential in order to Fender off the Ultimate Reality of the pain when can suffer in life via very creative fashion by speaking to truth 2 characters , therefore it naturally became funny. His Consciousness to do that I believe that was part of his genius
Neither. Sophia Loren either.
Loved love Walter Matthau! First remember him when I was at the El Monte Theater. I clearly remember the scene where he threw a plate of spaghetti in the movie, "The Odd Couple’. Over the years him in all his other movies, one of my favs is ‘ A New Leaf’.
