Another thing to take note for people looking into budget hunting rifles, you know the ones that come with a scope. Save yourself a headache and ditch that scope. Those scopes often adjust very poorly and make it difficult to dial in your scope. Sometimes you will set the vertical adjustment and the site will dial in diagonally.
You can get a Leupold 3-9X40 scope with a Duplex Reticle for around 200$. It will last you a lifetime and is backed by Leupold’s lifetime warranty. It really is worth spending the extra 200$

Good video! Clear and to the point.

My one disagreement was Leupold knowing exactly what hunters need. They still don’t offer a standard Milradian adjustment which is the main reason I went with a Nightforce. Irritating to no end.

Can you tell me what the most conclusive book on learning about rifle scopes is?

Randy, give me a shout the next time you’re hunting near Iowa. Would love to even meet up for a DIY public land hunt if you’re up for it. You pick the state and date and let me know. Email me if you want. God bless ya.

Randy – A very good plain english explanation of scope terminology. Just one small clarification. You said the objective lens end of the scope is always larger. It isn’t very common, but some scopes have an objective lens that is the same diameter as the scope tube and therefore smaller than the ocular end of the scope. It used to be more common on fixed, low magnification scopes. People used them when shooting short distances (maybe think dangerous game in Africa). Anyway thanks for all the information you are passing on.

what about the Parallax adjustment? How important is that when buying a scope if you plan on shooting out to a max of 300 yards?

  14. Renden Dye on November 28, 2021 at 8:20 pm

Would you recommend getting the Sig Sauer 2.5- 8X32mm or the Sig sauer 4.5-14x44mm or my other option is the vortex tactical 16X44 don’t know to much about scopes but building a long range muzzle loader! I have the cva paramount

Nice informative video. I love VX3i scopes with CDS and you also can send them into the Leupold Custom Shop and they will install a MOA dial for windage as well. I have done this on three VX3i scopes I have and when I did it was $90 per scope.
What sold me on Leupold CDS was Prairie Dogs shooting with ranges changing constantly.
D Q that would be Delta Quebec USMC 79-82

Nice acronym, but we all know D is in Diary and Q is in Queen aka Diary Queen, the home of the Dilly Bars and other delicious treats. Oh and if anyone is wondering about the rifle package in front of him that is the Randy Newberg Special Edition by Howa exclusive at Sportsmen’s Warehouse whether the physical store or the sportsmans.com website. Thanks for sharing a quick overview Randy, my youngest brother ordered a VX-3i 4.5-14×40 CDS for his 7mm Rem Mag and a VX-Freedom 4-12×40 for his .270 Win this year. He loves them and I recently acquired a .300 WSM, that I plan on eventually putting a Leupold on when I get the $$$, but the Redfield (owned by Leupold) Revenge Hunter 4-12×40 that he had on his .270 before upgrading to the Leupold will do me wonderfully until then.

  28. HB Hunter on November 28, 2021 at 8:43 pm

Thanks Randy however I have been hunting for over 25 years and I can not get a Leupold scope to hit close to the same spot? Starting with the VX1. My faith in this optic has gone out the window. I switched to another scope manufacture and have been solid. Leupold mounts on a 300 short mag, 30-06 now they are my go to for the good old 22lr for what ever pest they might hit. Thanks for the great videos from up here in Canada. Join me for a hunt one day.
