I’ve been shooting shotguns for deer my whole life, I have a mossberg 500 12 gauge, it has interchangeable barrels, a bird barrel and a slug barrel, which I really like. When I was too young for a 12 gauge I used a 20 gauge that didn’t have the slug barrel and that worked great as well. We use rifled slugs. My family has never tried anything else because they always worked, even with our rifled slug barrels. No scopes in our family. We generally cap our range at about 50 yards and don’t shoot beyond it.

I also have a Remington 870 in 12 gauge, can someone tell me what shells I need to hunt deer with ? I’ve only rifle hunted deer before.

  7. Jeff Smith on October 28, 2021 at 8:37 pm

I have a Ithaca 37 featherlight. Never shot any slugs or anything out of it. It’s a smoothbore with a bead so rifled slugs? Also do you think I could hunt deer with it?

any shotgun will work, it helps tremendously if you can shoot.

  12. Javier Monroe on October 28, 2021 at 8:45 pm

Rifled barrels definitely stabilizes slugs down range. DO NOT SIGHT IT IN WITH WHATEVER YOU HAVE ON HAND, that is probably why he believes its a myth.
Rifled shotgun barrels are made to work best with "Sabot Slugs" , You will not find a difference in accuracy if you are shooting rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel vs a smooth bore, however shooting Sabot Slugs out of a rifled barrel Vs Rifled Slugs out of a Smooth bore barrel, is literally a night and day difference in accuracy.
For deer hunting, buy the rifled barrel, shoot sabot slugs. BIG Difference !!!

Who is here after T65 shotgun with 8x

  15. Joseph Bonadio on October 28, 2021 at 8:47 pm

100% wrong, you don’t need a dedicated shotgun scope…..been hunting since 1980, rifle scopes (leupolds) on various slug guns 12ga & 20ga since the very late 80s without issues

  16. Arun Raghupathy on October 28, 2021 at 8:47 pm

How many of you are here after Thalapathy65 first-look poster!

  17. Mr Lundgren on October 28, 2021 at 8:47 pm

Rifled Brenneke slugs has been spinning out of smothbore shotguns since 1898 in Europe. It’s not a myth. That’s a fact. Sabot slugs without the rifles needs a rifled shotgun barrel to make the spin to stabilize the projectile.

I use a shotgun for deer hunting, first thing you want is 3" mags a long barrel to send a pattern way out me personally I use a coast to coast master mag 12 ga 30 inch fixed full choke vr barrel and#4 buck shot 41 pellets per round and @120yards it will put 30 to 37 pellets in a 12inch pie tin

  20. M L on October 28, 2021 at 8:53 pm

I love my 20ga 870 express youth. It’s so nice that it’s so light and gets the job done

  21. DkgOutdoors on October 28, 2021 at 8:54 pm

I managed to snag a an H&R USH 20 gauge for $300 and that’ll be my designated slug gun. I am currently loading my own slugs using the Sabot Pressure Wad slugs and some .575 diameter black powder rounds. Going to be trying them here soon, I am also running a Mossberg 930 with a rifled barrel and iron sights using Lyman 525 slugs and .678 roundball.

  22. Conrad Smith on October 28, 2021 at 8:54 pm

I just looked up that book. $527 on Amazon . Wtf?

  23. Outdoor hunting on October 28, 2021 at 8:55 pm

Have that same gun with a pistol grip

  24. Yackity Yack on October 28, 2021 at 8:56 pm

I found an old Winchester semiautomatic 12 gauge in a house we bought years ago and it shoots slugs like a laser beam. It only has a front bead sight but at 50 or 60 yards just put that bead where you want the slug to hit and she does the job. Now the old fore stock is broken but I fiberglassed it back together and wrapped some of that camo fabric wrap on it and it’s good as new.

  25. woofielove1970 on October 28, 2021 at 9:00 pm

So it’s true .. if I am using a Remington 870 12g 28" barrel for waterfowl .. I can actually use the same gun for deer and shoot buckshot or slugs for deer hunting !?! that’s great I only hunt deer once a year and I don’t want to have to buy a separate shotgun. THANKS!!!

  45. J John on October 28, 2021 at 9:20 pm

    What scope would you recommend?

  46. Brett’s Groovy chainsaws on October 28, 2021 at 9:23 pm

You’re right with the science of a slug gun. I use a mossberg semi auto 12 gauge. A Nikon buck master scope. Also Remington premier accutip ammo. 200 yards accurate within a 3” grouping. One thing I do suggest is do not use a pump slug gun. Way to hard to sight back in if the first shot didn’t count. Semi auto is the way to go. Also a built in muzzle break in the barrel helps on the recoil. So the Remington 870 slug gun. In which I have one. Is not the best sluggun to use. The mossberg 935 is way way better for hunting deer.

  47. Candy Crab on October 28, 2021 at 9:23 pm

Any scope can be used in any guns
Vijay annan can use 20x in revolver

Here is Sweden one of the classics is hunting Roe Deer with birdshot.
The deer dies from shock and you get almost and sometimes no meat damage.
