At the, quick, initial view of the reversed ballcap, the term "douchey" quickly entered my mind! Until, of course, it was quickly pointed out to be germane to the shoot.
A little warning would have been nice. Phew!
    Great vid, thanks!

What you explain about how to crop people in minute 4:15 should be in your book !! It took me like a week to find where I had seen it (which video or book).

I work for a small media company as a videographer/editor/web developer. On of our business neighbors comes waltzing into our office the other day asking if we do head shots. They want all their employees photographed for their website. My boss, the true salesman that he is, says, "Head shots? Yeah of course we do head shots." We have literally never offered this service to anyone.

He comes to me an hour later, "You can do, like, portrait head shots, right? They are an environmental engineering firm so they want to take the pictures outside." It might sound silly but I really only focus on videography and don’t know a whole lot about taking pictures. They are similar yet very different. So here I am, watching a YouTube video to teach myself how to do this. It’s amazing that society even functions.

Awesome tips and I must say Tony you are truly a very blessed man as Chelsea is gorgeous and also a very beautiful model. First saw her on one of your wildlife video shoots and thought she was just another photographer yet didn’t know till I subscribed she was your wife and you also have a beautiful child. Truly your a blessed man and love your videos as have always wanted to do wildlife and other photography and now that I took a early retirement I’m hoping to explore and get more into my dream.

Thanks for the tips and looking forward to getting your book soon though I have Lightroom 5 and was going to move to 6 till Adobe went cloud as I have a IT background and not at all a cloud fan. So moved to a alternative Luminar 4 which I’m learning as well yet wonder if maybe some Lightroom book may prove helpful in learning as well. But will start with your main book first and may gear one as looking at the 90d as want to move up from T5 as final camera as lens are my next move and in the wildlife video I first saw Chelsea in I like her lens (can’t remember right now have to go back and view) but I’ve always wanted the 70-200 as my first lens though the f2.8 was a little out of budget for now and would have to go with f4 for now. Now with this video I see how portraits may even prove this to me one of my main photo lens all around. Thanks for the tips and looked forward to viewing more of Chelsea and you videos and website.

So for an outdoor shoot you really only need an on camera flash? And maybe a diffuser?

  29. Graham Smith on December 10, 2021 at 9:56 pm

    zoom with your feet

  30. Mauricio Chaar on December 10, 2021 at 9:57 pm

My flash no rotate. Is fixed for front only. I make a zigzag bouncer in home with paperboard.

  31. Jeff Albritton on December 10, 2021 at 9:59 pm

Why are you using 2/3 exposure comp to the right?

  32. PaweΕ‚ Przybylski on December 10, 2021 at 10:01 pm

    That was awsome!

  33. KIRK on December 10, 2021 at 10:01 pm

    I love you guys

  35. Romie Miller on December 10, 2021 at 10:01 pm

I agree with you about using zoom lenses. They also can vary the background compression, which is something most photographers don’t think about.

Thank you so much for this video. Great information. I’ve taken many photos of objects, landscapes, flowers, etc. but there’s a gap in my skillset with portraits and people. I really appreciate this information.

  43. Sawta on December 10, 2021 at 10:08 pm

Anyone know of a reliable diffuser stand or mount for outdoor shoots? I don’t have anyone to hold one for me, and if I’m holding it with my right hand, I wouldn’t be able to do shutter release. I could do delayed shoot, and pull it up really quick, but that would obviously look and be very awkward. It would also slow things down quite a bit. I realize just about any mount is going to fall over in high winds, like in the video, but all of the options I’ve seen online so far look really cheap and geared towards studio shoots. Not even sure where to start, or what it would look like.
