Mossberg Patriot 30-06 Part 1 – Wolf 140 gr. SP. – Reloader Joe #8

Mossberg Patriot 30-06 Part 1 – Wolf 140 gr. SP. – Reloader Joe #8

Today we shoot the Mossberg Patriot for the first time. This one came with open sights and a walnut stock. Ours is chambered in the venerable .30-06 Springfield. I wanted the classic look of a bolt action rifle with open sights. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a good sight picture with the open sights (it’s the first time I’ve ever had a problem lining up open sights). To get the front and rear sights to line up, I had to tilt my head in such an uncomfortable position, it would have been impossible to shoot without injuring myself. I was forced to install a scope. In the long run, for me, it would have been more economical to have just purchased the Mossberg Patriot as one of their rifle/scope combos. This is the downside of Internet firearms purchasing, not getting to handle the rifle before purchase.

We start by shooting Wolf steel case 140 grain soft point ammo at 25 yards after bore sighting the scope.

That round has been through savage 110s remington 700s and the trusty old model 70 pre 64 dead minute of angle round

Shouldnt rest the barrel on the bag.
At long distances this changes the aim by slightly bending the barrel.(saw this in another vid)
Rest the stock on the bag.

  6. Justin Campbell on November 30, 2021 at 7:10 pm

Hodgdon h4831 57 grains 180 grain bullet. Prefer hornandy A-frames . Most accurate round out of 30/06 no crimp . If you can’t shoot a minute of angle with that round. It’s the rifle or it’s your shooting. Retired marine sniper

How far are those bullets flying through the woods behind the target? Rule # 4, always be sure of the target and what’s behind it…

Did you try moving the back of the iron sights up to get it lined up to your eye before putting the scope on

Thats a really nice looking rifle. Put a stick of 2×4 under your rear bag.

I love open sights and just got my first 30-06 at the ripe old age of 40 after hunting for over 20 years. Mine is a tastefully sporterized M1917 (American Enfield). All Winchester matching, with all the right inspection stamps from the armory. Love 30-06 now. And the battle peep sights are right on target. Gonna definitely take it out for deer season this year.

I was going to say. Lifting the rifle off the rest between shots is not conducive to good groups.

What ammo would you guys like to see me shoot next in this rifle?

  21. m2gja m1 on November 30, 2021 at 7:34 pm

I’m new to your channel. Did you shoot a group with open sights.? I would like to see how that works out I have a lot of 3006. I own two M1 rifles a M1903-1903a3 m1917 and more 8MM Mauser . I got a lot of great deals as a young Soldier in the early eighties. I have a good deal of modern rifles and shotguns too. I have four Mossberg shotguns and a Winchester. I will browse your sight.. You have some nice stuff. I noticed a Marlin camp carbine in.45 caliber and more I have the same carbine. I served thirty years in the United States Army 12years in the Ranger Regiment. I retired in 2010 a Sergeant Major. I live in New York now about thirty miles east of midtown Manhattan. I have a commitment here another 6 months. Then I will move. I want to be near my kids who live with me. My wife passed September 2018 cancer that crushed me. But I will see her again one day. I have Ruger mini thirty and Mini 14 Both wood. That’s why I like the Mossberg it’s walnut. But I want to get a modern bolt gun. Maybe a 5.56NATO/ 223 or another 3006. For deer I used a Marlin 444 dropped them. Great round 265gr. I reload a bunch of calibers. Thanks for the videos!

That poor chicken didn’t know In what direction to run 😂

  24. smartacus88 on November 30, 2021 at 7:43 pm

That is a damn handsome rifle. I can live with a polymer mag, but why oh why did they give such a nicely built rifle a polymer trigger guard assembly? They could’ve gotten away with an aluminum assembly and still kept the price around 450. Damn shame. Oh well, the search continues.

  25. Jon Teesdale on November 30, 2021 at 7:45 pm

Lol that Chicken about shit itself!🤣😂

  26. Justin Campbell on November 30, 2021 at 7:46 pm

  27. Aidan McInnis on November 30, 2021 at 7:46 pm

How did you get one with iron sights??

  28. Justin Campbell on November 30, 2021 at 7:47 pm

Not bad for a non magnum round.

  29. Justin Campbell on November 30, 2021 at 7:48 pm

You have never reloaded. And your rifle is what it is. A hunting rifle.

  30. Justin Campbell on November 30, 2021 at 7:49 pm

For 450 you aren’t gonna get presise matching . Ur gonna get russian quality during ww2
