How to Use an OWB Holster for Concealed Carry

How to Use an OWB Holster for Concealed Carry

OWB concealed carry is completely possible, and easier than you’d think. It does, however, take a bit of planning. You have to have the right gear. It also helps to dress a bit around the gun.

Good concealment with an OWB holster depends on a balance of factors. While it’s not hard, it does take prudent selection of clothing, a holster, the gun itself, and also understanding how a gun and holster wear on your body. If successful, you may find it even more comfortable than carrying with an IWB.

The holster must ride high and the belt and tight to the body. In order for clothing to cover up a gun carried outside the waistband, your holster can’t protrude too far down from the belt nor stick out too far from your side. That way, minimal clothing is needed to effectively conceal the gun and holster.

You also need to choose the right gun, though your specific shape and size matters in this regard. A taller person will have an easier time concealing a longer pistol. Therefore, you probably will have a harder time concealing a 1911 or a Glock 17 if you’re five and a half feet tall. A relatively skinny person with a relatively low waist line will have a hard time concealing a Sig Sauer P226. Most people will conceal a smaller pistol much more easily.

You also want to make clothing selections that set you up for success. Untucked shirts can cover a lot of gun, especially if you wear a tall size. A light outer layer, like a flannel shirt, can also hide a lot of gun with judicious placement.

A vest works well…but is a terrible cliche. That’s up to you.

OWB concealed carry is completely possible, but takes a bit of dialing in. If you pick an appropriate gun, holster and clothing, you’ll find it’s easier than you’d think.

Alien Gear Holsters knows about comfortable concealed carry, as our holsters – including our OWB holsters – are designed with specific use in mind. We have multiple models suited to OWB concealed carry should that be how you want to carry your pistol.

  14. Joey Ingles on November 12, 2021 at 10:00 pm

Ironically, the IWB in the 5 o’clock position was most noticeable through the jacket.

In Oklahoma the law is the firearm has to be directed downward or upward. Anything else will be considered as pointing the weapon at whomever is in the line of the barrel. It is also considered sweeping too.

That was a law that was past. This last legislative session and signed by the governor in 2021.

  19. Eric on November 12, 2021 at 10:10 pm

Great if your slim but I know lots of people that have a gut you should make holster for plus size men who carry also. But you do have awsome holster.

  21. JCG NBD on November 12, 2021 at 10:11 pm

Going to check your other videos – do you have one for small petite females (or males☺️) that wear tighter fitting clothing….printing is a huge issue for me, while still maintaining comfortable laity.

  22. Zachary Neufeld on November 12, 2021 at 10:12 pm

You both were printing from the start .I could tell flannel guy was carrying on both sides.

Paddle OWB holster..no good…unless u got a coat. That wouldn’t work in Florida in August. Lmao.
I got a huckleberry tactical IWB holster for HK VP9 full size. Conceals 100%

  28. Tori Te on November 12, 2021 at 10:19 pm

Do you make a holster for a Ruger SR22 for women that does not require wearing a belt but grips the waistband fabric?

  29. rbby15 on November 12, 2021 at 10:21 pm

    hockey sweater

  30. Phil Kearny on November 12, 2021 at 10:24 pm

My EDC is an Alien Gear Cloak Belt OWB, and it’s quite easy to conceal with just an oversized button-front shirt. However… the separate off-side mag carrier prints badly. Maybe y’all should go back to the drawing board on that.

  31. TheCrewChief on November 12, 2021 at 10:26 pm

My Alien gear holsters for open carry opens up at the seam at the barrel end. When I holster my Glock 17. Which the wrong holster that was sent to me in the four in one kit. For the Glock 19/23/32 my Glock fit perfectly outside the fact it wasn’t for a G17.

  32. lamonstra on November 12, 2021 at 10:26 pm

Gun nut to everyone: most people should not own a gun and most people who own one should not carry. A near total lack of training and complete lack of judgment.

  33. Dastardly XK120 on November 12, 2021 at 10:27 pm

    Nice work Nasty Nate 💥

  34. Mark Holmberg on November 12, 2021 at 10:27 pm

    Aspects to a good holster:
    * Firearm retention – the weapon does not slip out of the holster
    * Holster retention – the holster stays where you put it
    * Prevents Negligent Discharge – Trigger Guard and trigger is covered completely
    * Easy to reholster – More for the range training
    * Concealment – The best holster is garbage if people know you’re packing
    * Number Two – how easy / convenient / QUIET is the holster when you have to go number two at work?

  35. jonesfamilyelite on November 12, 2021 at 10:27 pm

Who shoulder holsters. Like. Seriously. Who actually carries. Shoulder holstered ?

  37. Stephen Goodman on November 12, 2021 at 10:30 pm

yeah looks sturdy but compared to trigger guard and made to order holsters, these are barbaric and cumbersome

It looks like there’s a brick under his shirt with the owb. Lots and lots of companies make better options.

  45. Rapier Sister on November 12, 2021 at 10:43 pm

If you’re as skinny as I am you can only carry on the small of your back. Winter is the only time I can carry anywhere else on my body.

  46. Coolzer0 on November 12, 2021 at 10:46 pm

That man is geared up for war man…

  47. Joe Hernandez on November 12, 2021 at 10:46 pm

If you wear a long Justin Bieber shirt you can conceal everything, even a Desert Eagle. 😛

Waiting for my starter pack to come in with added ankle carry attachment. Also got an extra shell for another pistol. Alien Gear did good with their innovation here. Modularity rules.
