I also oil my guns after cleaning. I put and leave oil on gun and loosely wrap in a rag and put it in it’s case.

Hi, great video! I used the same exact method on my shotgun barrel and the rust looked exactly like it did on your barrel. It got most of it off but now it seems like the rust is smooth with the barrel so no matter how much more I scrubbed there was still some there. Is this normal or should all the rust be gone? Thank you so much!

  9. jimmymckay73 on October 28, 2021 at 8:37 pm

Video you won’t need any chemicals . Proceeds to break out a jug of oil . 😆 great tip though . I will add to break down the fjirearm as far as you are comfortable doing so . Rust gets everywhere .

I agree with the steel wool and oil method for light rust. One other thing I find that works well for heavier rust removing is GOJO hand cleaner. I usually just work it in with my fingers and leave it for a few minutes then damp cloth (not wet) rub/scrub. Follow up with a good cleaning and a good oil for protection.

Cheers mate! I have a Ruger American Rifle that has never seen water, however it’s starting to get some little rust spots on it. Will give this a try, stoked that it won’t effect the blue finish!!

This is basically a type of "rust blueing," a very old method of bluing firearms.

I have a 22/22mag single action revolver. I had it tucked away in the back of my truck in compartment. In a plastic bag. But it still got rust development. I am going to use your method of cleaning it up. I may have to disassemble the weapon and clean it piece by piece.
If you have any other suggestions I would love to hear them
    Thank you

  26. Jack Mountain on October 28, 2021 at 9:00 pm

I oiled after cleaning and use, then I stored it in a full coverage cloth and wiped it dry before using it again. A light coat of oil. I was a rust worker, job title (Corrosion Control Specialist) in The US Air Force. Rust starts on the outer surfaces, then goes deeper. I even oiled the wood.

small rust is ok..but old and more rust is not possible

thank u so much u just saved a .22 if mine that got really rusted while on the trapline great video!

  29. James Pruitt on October 28, 2021 at 9:01 pm

Great tip with the steel wool. I collect older camping lanterns, several nickel plated. The 0000 wool does wonders for polishing without scratching it up.

  30. John Colvin on October 28, 2021 at 9:02 pm

Thank you for that… I will never own a firearm, but I sure as hell own plenty of rust! I am restoring a 70 year old lathe & milling attachment that have been stored for twelve years where moisture could get to them. :o( Many of the smaller parts have a blued finish, and I have been wondering how to clean them.

  32. Patrick Green on October 28, 2021 at 9:05 pm

Or just use a real copper penny
Just rub it over the rust
    Then use gun oil

A severely rusted gun should be boiled not sanded with steel wool and oil

  38. D - on October 28, 2021 at 9:11 pm

Guys don’t EVER use steel wool on you firearm 😂 wtf

  39. Gus Loader on October 28, 2021 at 9:11 pm

I like this idea. I bought and used one of the "Rust Removers" on a Rem. M700 for a very small rust area near barrel/chamber about five years ago. Maybe about 1/8" by 1/2". Wanted to stop the rust from spreading. Applied the "Rust Remover" stuff and it took off the rust but also the whole exterior finish for about 1" by 3". 🙁 I just "subscribed".

Can I use WD-40 on my shotgun?

  49. Lead mine on October 28, 2021 at 9:23 pm

Ive used this method for years as a professional gunsmith. I make one substitution: Use Bronze wool instead of steel wool. The leftover bits of steel wool will rust away leaving mure "red rust" spots if not removed by compressor air or such. Bronze is also softer on the blued finish. If you want to strip it down to bare steel real quick, I suggest using a green pot scrubber pad!
