Disassemble and Clean a Colt Model 1911 – Gunsmith Tip

A little TLC today will ensure that your favorite .45 ACP will work flawlessly the next time you shoot it. Veteran gunsmith Mitch Schultz notes that many Model 1911s that come into his shop for “repair” really just need a good cleaning and proper lubrication. To get the job done right, watch Mitch show you how to field strip, clean and lubricate your favorite 1911 the right way. (NSSF Video) #LetsGoShooting #NSSF

    Nicely done.

  2. Stone on November 24, 2021 at 12:03 am

This is some serious oldschool cleaning.
My suggestion would be to use non flammable gun oil. A military grade used for a M16, and any AR. (I get my cleaning kits from Thiesens) and I use it for all my guns. One drop of oil here and there is not enough.. doing that can actually cause your gun to jam quickly and or burn and damage the outer casing of your gun if you dont use enough oil.
Sometimes using a little too much wont hurt, you might get a little oil splatter when firing your fist few rounds off, but it will not hurt anything, as long as your using good high quality nonflammable gun oil.

    Except I use this stuff

This was GREAT! Excellent instruction without the editorial crap that one sometimes sees in these, that often have NOTHING to do with the issue. Ten out of 10!!!! Thanks so much!

He put hand in the way so I couldn’t see hat he did when he said…"First thing, open your slide"….couldn’t see what he did. Also when he demonstrates, cameraman should get an extreme close-up

I own a Colt 1911 SS Government Model 45 ACP. The front site is a pinned sight and is loose in the hole. It also appears to be elevated and not flush with the barrel. I took it to a gunsmith who attempted to stake it again. He was able to tighten it but after one trip to the range it was loose again. My question is that is this loose fit normal and if not what is the possibility of removing the poorly designed staked blade front sit and replacing it with a dovetail site?

Let’s keep the camera a little farther away from the gun, and on the two guys.

  20. LightningAssault.com on November 24, 2021 at 12:25 am

Why is too much oil bad?

  21. Clinton Sequerah-Salmon on November 24, 2021 at 12:26 am

Ok. Nice vide but FIRST Thing: remove magazine then rack slide. Not the other way around. If for some reason you have a round in the mag, by racking first , you’ve just chambered a round. So, mag out, rack slide and engage slide stop. Continue stripping as instructed

  22. NoFailureAllowed on November 24, 2021 at 12:28 am

the owner unfortunately put a mark on the frame when putting the slide stop pin back in place (5:13)

  24. Team Punisher on November 24, 2021 at 12:30 am

Larry Vickers proved that you can’t over oil your 1911… A drop isn’t enough…

Good video, as NSSF videos always are.  However, a few close-ups would really help.

  28. Jason Kunert on November 24, 2021 at 12:33 am

You make that look ridiculously easy! Nice demo 👍

  29. 12gauge1oz on November 24, 2021 at 12:36 am

Excellent video. Mr Schultz is a gentleman and a craftsman.

  30. Jeremy Green on November 24, 2021 at 12:37 am

Thanks, it was helpful, but could you possibly reshoot this video with the camera looking over the gunsmith’s shoulder (where you are standing) so we can see every detail. Do we really need the shot from the side showing you two standing there? I would like to see every detail clearly shown. Poor photography angles prevent viewers from seeing everything. After playing and replaying over and over, I think I actually got it right though.

  31. Jeremy Day on November 24, 2021 at 12:38 am

Too much oil is not a bad thing. The 1911 likes to run wet.

  32. Prestone VaanHorne on November 24, 2021 at 12:40 am

Thank you. Good Video-EXCEPT YOUR FRIGGIN HAND IS IN THE WAY AT THE VERY END!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sucks. It’d be great to show the challenging parts instead of just saying it and letting us beginners guess what you’re talking about.

  46. Ron Foos on November 24, 2021 at 12:51 am

Very well put together instructional video and EZ to understand. Thank you!

  47. Joe Doakes on November 24, 2021 at 12:51 am

Thanks you for the excellent video.

Everyone seems to do it a bit different and, of course, there’s a lube method daily carry and another for long-term storage nonetheless, unless I missed this in the video, don’t the locking lugs and grooves on both the slide and barrel get lubed? I was always taught to do this.

  48. Maj3stik on November 24, 2021 at 12:53 am

My dad has one, and he hasn’t shot it in 20 years. So, I am cleaning it before taking it to the range to try to out.
