CUR-2, WUM-2, Romak-992, & Other Early 5.45×39 Romanian 'AK-74' Imports (1997-1999)

CUR-2, WUM-2, Romak-992, & Other Early 5.45×39 Romanian 'AK-74' Imports (1997-1999)

Today, I thought it would be fun and interesting to talk about the first 5.45×39 chambered semi-automatic AK type rifles to come in from Romania. Before the WASR-2 and even before the SAR-2 from Century Arms, two other importers tried their luck with Cugir products. These were Intrac and D.I.G. (Dominion Investment Group).
Importation started in 1997 and really up through 1999, things were a bit disorganized, odd, and random to say the least.
In Romania, the select fire 5.45mm caliber rifle is known as the PA-86, and several semi-auto rifle variants based on it came in during the early days, under several names/designations.
These included: CUR-2, MK. II, WUM-2, Romak-2, and Romak-99.2. It wasn’t until Century took over and introduced the SAR-2, that things really became stable and predictable.

Please note that the PA-86 really isn’t an AK-74 clone or copy. Romania did its own thing, basing this series more on the AKM than the Soviet-Russian pattern.

I bought my Romanian SAR-2 years ago for just over $300. Other than some trigger slap (easily fixed with a Tapco G2) it has been a phenomenal rifle. Shoots excellent groups with 40+ year old Russian surplus 7n6 ammo. Down to my last crate 🙁 Thanks, BATF for your senseless import ban.)

  5. Gage on October 27, 2021 at 5:33 pm

Think Century will get Cugir to start sending over batches of the WASR-2 again? To help satisfy the 5.45 craze, it’s the only 5.45 import I can really see being possible.

@mishaco does your SAR2 conversion have bullet wobble? Mine does and with its factory barrel

I mean no disrespect when I say you have a very calming voice. Listening to you talk about rifles is what I do right before bed.

  19. Cajun Catfish on October 27, 2021 at 5:51 pm

For some reason "WUM-2" is the most amusing name for an AK I’ve seen so far. I’m not sure why.

  20. Pete Sheppard on October 27, 2021 at 5:51 pm

Funny thing; I’d like to have an unmodified ban AK, because even the mutilated, castrated guns are a part of the AK story.

My push button folder on my Romak keeps coming loose. Have you ran into this issue? If so, did you buy replacement screws or do something else?

  23. RupanRx on October 27, 2021 at 5:52 pm

I recently sold my sar2 to a buddy. Had only couple hundred rounds through it according to original owner. Was a old shade tree gunsmith 922r conversion. I have an aims74 kit build, otherwise I wouldn’t have parted with the sar2. My photos say serial number is s2-02209-99. Not sure if more numbers are covered by the top cover. Says made by S N Romarm S A / cugir. Imported by century (cai). Markings look like quick and dirty. My psl is 2019 dated rifle. Thanks

  24. OP Fly Fishing on October 27, 2021 at 5:53 pm

I wanted to thank you for going through all of this this for me. My uncle died and left me a AK-74 with 6 mags. The numbers are SAR 2 S2-01150-99. It was all wood furniture with a rubber pistol grip.
I’ve since found a cleaning rod sling and bayonet (wood) and 40 round mag.

I’d like to make this gun period correct what kind of furniture would have came with this gun?

  26. GenericWhiteGuy on October 27, 2021 at 5:54 pm

I have a Romak 992 (found it at the flea market). It is double stack, but it does not have the “OOW” marks anywhere on it. It came with the PSL-style thumb hole stock and no muzzle cap, and there appears to be some very light threading on the muzzle, but not enough to safely attach a muzzle device.

Edit: It also has the upswept charging handle, no mag well dimples, is all matching serials and was imported by DiG, with the factory name “Romarm/Cugir”.Trunnion date is, of course, 1999.

  27. Derek Wild on October 27, 2021 at 5:55 pm

    I own a WUM 1 CUR
Dated 1997 imported by Intrac Arms, Ratmil
    All numbers matching

  28. Ryan John on October 27, 2021 at 5:55 pm

Mishaco. What’s a Romak 992 valued at now a days?? good condition.

  29. Christo Alan 89 on October 27, 2021 at 5:56 pm

    Romak series, I love the 1 & 2
I have a neat WASR 2, 2002 upswept charging handle, pretty neat my favorite wasr of all. The SAR-1 & 2 as well are bundles of joy

  30. Luke D on October 27, 2021 at 5:57 pm

I would love to know your thoughts on the modern Chinese millitary 5.8mm assault rifle round.

  31. David Mekelburg on October 27, 2021 at 5:57 pm

I have a CUR-2, intrac arms, with a differing bolt serial number, manufactured in 1997. The guy I bought it from said he never changed the furniture, yet it didn’t come with the thumb hole stock, it has the black polymer grip with standard wood furniture, like I’ve Heard many SARS came imported with. Mine has no markings from a US side manufacturer, but it has the ak -74 muzzle brake, which the previous owner also said he did not install. I guess this gun is kind of an enigma, perhaps a transitory model between the CUR and SAR

  32. Chris Harper on October 27, 2021 at 5:58 pm

    What’s a C.u.r. 2 worth in today’s market?

  33. Tsuchinoko Z on October 27, 2021 at 5:59 pm

Awesome video! I had a ROMAK 2 1997 DIG import upswept charging handle unthreaded. The trunnion, hammer and rear sight all matched. The bolt, carrier gas tube did not match, however they were all matching each other (second set of numbers). The rear “trunnion” was electro penciled with the number set found on the second set of numbers. It seems they may have used military rifle parts where allowable, in that second set such as bolt, carrier and gas tube.

I also have a 1997 ROMAK 1 now, also DIG, non unswept charging handle. It is also numbers matching including the hammer. I suspect A previous owner threaded muzzle. It appears to be the correct amount of threading. However it is not flush with the front sight block. I suspect they perhaps had placed the front sight block farther back to 5.45 threaded front sight block spec. I believe these were set back father on the barrel than a traditional AKM, which would explain the gap. Thankfully the sugar scoop engages the detent and is stable enough, however leaning towards threading all the way to the from sight block. Some animal ground the sling swivel loop off the handguard retainer to fit an early magpul handguard. Hoping to have the barrel components removed to replace the handguard retainer, which would give the opportunity to attach a bayonet lugged gas block at least!

  34. Zachary Batten on October 27, 2021 at 6:00 pm

What would you say are good prices ranges for these specifically a converted CUR-2 with the 22mm threads?

  35. G Berky on October 27, 2021 at 6:01 pm

I drink all the time because I cannot own anything 5.45

  36. JB123. on October 27, 2021 at 6:03 pm

Have the Romak 2 and SAR 1… the Romak is a Ratmil/Cugir.. Bolt, Bolt Head, Gas Tube, front sight(etched), Rear Trunnion(etched) all match.. and Safety Selector, Front Trunnion have separate matching #..it’s a 1997 yr model… I also converted mine w/ an Aims 74 kit from Arms of America bc I originally watched a video by you talking abt the Aims kits available and that was the first time I had ever heard of Arms of America.. now several guns, a couple parts kits and many parts/accessories purchases later.. there one of my favorite companies to deal with.. so thank you.. I truly enjoy my Romak 2.. it’s one that I would never sell unless life just force me to

  44. ajttambo on October 27, 2021 at 6:16 pm

Just debanned my SAR-1 today by having its barrel threaded and swapping the gas block for one with bayonet lugs. Thanks Misha, never would have bought this thing if it where not for your channel.

  45. john patino on October 27, 2021 at 6:17 pm

I have Romak 2, date is 97. All matching numbers: top cove, gas tube, bolt, bolt carrier(up swept charging handle) and front sight. Front Trunnion does have a different number with date code.
Ratmil/Cugir import DIG Va. Bch. Va.
    Great video.

  46. Roderick Arnold on October 27, 2021 at 6:18 pm

Thank you for this! My dad and I bought an interesting variation of the Romak 992 back in the mid ’90s, for 200 bucks. It is a single stack, with the same thumbhole stock as on that MK2. I’m still struggling to decide whether it is worth converting to double stack, because it is such a nice little gun. Fit and finish are phenomenal.

rock island had one that went for banana money 1300

  50. Ken Kellogg on October 27, 2021 at 6:23 pm

Some of the Cur 2 had a 22 mm brake welded to the pressed on muzzle nut. Not sure if it was on early or late on these. Also like you stated most were non matching. From all the ones I have seen receiver, gas tube and top cover match . Bolt and Carrier serial matched but not to the gun. Also the bolt carriers sear notch was taken off. I like these guns as well. Another note the wasr2 barrel was still 23 mm but the barrel profile was standard akm not skinnier like the earlier imports. The only Romanian import I hate is the Wum 1. There not quite junk but far from the quality of the others.
