642 S&W .38 Special (Airweight J frame)

642 S&W .38 Special (Airweight J frame)

Demonstration of possibly the most popular little .38 Special revolver, the Model 642 Airweight from Smith & Wesson. Also, the S&W Model 65 .357 Magnum.

I didn’t make it clear in the video, but I ground off the hammer spur on the .357 magnum Model 65 I’m demonstrating.

Can these revolvers take + p ammo.

  4. TLElliott-NC on November 22, 2021 at 10:11 pm

Great little gun. Although a S&W M&P9 2.0 Compact is my every day carry gun, I will take this instead sometimes. I use a SmartCarry waist holster under shorts or pants, so I can wear it with just shorts and no t-shirt or under a suit when I know I’ll take off my coat and expose an IWB or OWB. Also lets me carry a speed strip with 5 more rounds. Not mentioned is that 38SPL ammo today is a very effective round, not like that of the 1940s or 1950s.

I have one of these, and I can’t hit a beer can at 5 feet…

  7. John Olson on November 22, 2021 at 10:17 pm

Here in 2020 because he mentioned S&W 642 and I’d never heard of it. I googled it and here I am 11 years in the past, the internet is weird. Hickock45 will live on forever in these videos. This YouTube channel is a historical treasure.

I recently shot a J frame for the first time in a decade at a dimly lit, humid range. I optimistically chose one of the sheets with 5 miniature targets on it and ran it out to about 20 feet. Between the fogging of my safety glasses and the lighting…well, let’s just say I was able to hit the paper almost every time. lol. Then this guy rings an 80 yard gong on the second try.

    2020 still watching old vids

  10. Jimmy Murley on November 22, 2021 at 10:28 pm

Hey Hickock45! I’ve recently acquired one of these old Airweights 38 spc ctg on the barrel with the (I’m assuming it’s called) the snag free hammer (not the concealed hammer) and I’m having difficulty finding a pocket holster that actually will hold the pistol. I’ve tried DeSantis, StickyHolsters, and few generic and every single one of them allows the pistol to free fall, if you will, right out. Any suggestions??? Barrel is 1.875 inch barrel and shoot great. I got to have something snug even it’s leather with some type of retention strap. Thanks and love the videos.

    Love this gun!

  12. Billy Gilbert on November 22, 2021 at 10:29 pm

Always enjoy his videos, just bought a Performance Center 642, can’t wait to shoot it but will never even be close to the kind of pistolero he is!

  13. ChillBro Braggins on November 22, 2021 at 10:30 pm

Yup I have mine I open carry and keep a speed loader in my pocket as well. I was surprised how accurate it is compared to other snub noses I shot. It took a little practice to get a feel for it, but not much. Good little lightweight handgun and having a speed loader I bought for $10 on Amazon gives me 10 shots quickly. I recommend 9/10.

  16. Harold Davis on November 22, 2021 at 10:34 pm

That 66 was so cool .
I had a model 10 bobbed like that.
Before I got it, It was carried a lot.
I sold it a few years ago and miss it dearly.
Talk about character, those old bobbed hammer Smiths have lots of character.

  17. Ham on November 22, 2021 at 10:35 pm

No body has to know I cocked the hammer.

  18. Southernbuck101 Georgia on November 22, 2021 at 10:36 pm

Mirnin,Sir. I just bought myself one of these. No lock, just like yours. I always love looking back at these older vids. Still amazed you hit an 80 yard target (although after watching you for all these years,Im not sure why Im amazed) with a 1-7/8" bbl. Stay healthy,my friend.

  19. UnKowN mIkE on November 22, 2021 at 10:39 pm

Why don’t you wanna cock a revolver in a self defense situation I never understood yhst

  20. Count Vlad on November 22, 2021 at 10:39 pm

guy still rings the gong with a 2 inch barrel

  21. EastCoastCreativity on November 22, 2021 at 10:40 pm

This is my carry gun, and I love it. Small enough to want to carry daily, packs enough punch to do the job right, and surprisingly accurate. Highly recommend for a concealed carry piece.

  22. Larry Ross on November 22, 2021 at 10:42 pm

Hey @hickok45 do you think you could put a link for the exact speed loader your using in this video ? Thanks!!

  23. super1million11 on November 22, 2021 at 10:44 pm

this video is so old that the targets have turned pee yellow

  24. John D on November 22, 2021 at 10:45 pm

    I’m 25 years old and I carry a Ruger SP101 .357 Magnum. I’m thinking about getting a S&W 442, though.

  25. ChillBro Braggins on November 22, 2021 at 10:46 pm

Been subscribed for years. So when I just got my 642 last week I thought hey I wonder if he has reviewed this. And sure enough you did. Is there anything you haven’t reviewed? Much love from Michigan. Love this gun

  27. Michael Garza on November 22, 2021 at 10:48 pm

To Mr Hickok that gun is an ar15, shotgun, sniper, handgun, slingshot… After he hit that thing that far my jaw dropped. Daaaaaaaanm I am convinced this is John Wicks dad.

  30. bhunsi on November 22, 2021 at 10:50 pm

    Which speed loader is that?

  31. UR HIRED HR on November 22, 2021 at 10:52 pm

First time gun buyer specifically for home defense. There are so many guns and every one seems to have a plus and a minus. I selected the Smith and Wesson 38 special J series. Thanks for this information and Im looking forward to buying some ammunition, when available and training!

  32. GLOCKCOPG23 on November 22, 2021 at 10:54 pm

This gentleman has hands like a bench vise. 80 yards is Incredible shooting of a snubby!

  33. Sushiro Mifune on November 22, 2021 at 10:56 pm

This variation is the main-equipment of the police in my country. Aluminum Chief .38 light-load. For some reason, sometimes they accidentally discharge the revolver.

Gonna get this for my mom on her birthday

  35. Mike S on November 22, 2021 at 10:59 pm

These were all the rage in new york city in the 60s to 80s. People were able to defend themselves from a mugger without taking their hands out of their jackets.

  42. Wayne Emerson on November 22, 2021 at 11:05 pm

My S&W 65 with 3” barrel is my favorite gun I own. It sleeps 2’ away from me every night and is fun to shoot. Simple, reliable, and powerful. Great home protection.

  44. John McDougall on November 22, 2021 at 11:06 pm

I have one with a Crimson Trace on it. Gave it to my wife as her EDC, and I steal it every chance we are not traveling together as it literally fits in my pocket, and I don’t have to wear the super fat pants, or shorts with my IWB. Planning on getting another.

    Where can I trade a J Frame S & W 38 Sp, alloy frame for a K Frame 357/38 Sp revolver?

  49. Nick Murray on November 22, 2021 at 11:09 pm

Does anyone else’s 642 have a really hard trigger pull?

  50. TheProfessor on November 22, 2021 at 11:09 pm

Still choose a 637 for that .00001% chance i may need an exposed hammer for a more accurate shot than something like a 642. Even though the 642 trigger is so stage able its insane..Also its even more blurry in a court room using a SA/DA but that’s just me personally …..peace brother nice shooting
