While there are a lot of “Youth Rifles” on the market, I find most of them to be lacking. To have a true Youth Rifle, you need something that is not only short with a short length of pull, but something light weight.

Savage has done a great job of this with their Savage Rascal chambered in .22 long rifle. They have created a great little single shot rimfire rifle that weighs just over 2.5 pounds. And it has features that mirror regular rifles for a seamless transfer of skills.

I just ordered one of these for my 6 year old. He’s a lefty and I was looking for the southpaw model but after watching your son do just fine I settled on the standard version. Thanks for the video.

How to be a great dad 101

  20. hdesai1181 on November 30, 2021 at 10:53 pm

Hey Kit, awesome video! Question: my son is 6 and fairly small (about 3’9") and hasn’t really handled any firearm. Would you say this savage would be too much gun for him? I’ve been going back and forth between an airsoft rifle, a bb gun, and a 22lr like this one and the keystone crickett. Thanks in advance!

  21. Dylan Hinojosa on November 30, 2021 at 10:54 pm

    When I was nine I started shooting a 30-06

  22. Dave Orrick on November 30, 2021 at 10:57 pm

Great vid. It’s now two years later … does the kid still feel comfortable in this rifle? My kid is 10 and kind of tall for 10, so I’m wondering if it’s too small for him. (He currently shoots an air rifle with a 14" LOP, which is clearly a bit long but it’s so light it doesn’t matter.)

  23. Silent Whistle Blower on November 30, 2021 at 10:59 pm

It is time they make this things with magazines.

  31. Dan P on November 30, 2021 at 11:04 pm

It’s a single shot? Or does it hold any rounds internally?

  32. KJV1611AV on November 30, 2021 at 11:05 pm

Thinking of getting one for my boys….looks fun !

  33. Dan Anderson on November 30, 2021 at 11:07 pm

Ivan, which optic did you end up getting for this rifle? Christmas is coming up, and an optic would make a fantastic present for my son. 😉

  34. no u on November 30, 2021 at 11:08 pm

I’m not the biggest fan of iron sights, I like scopes better.

  35. Screamin Minis MBC on November 30, 2021 at 11:08 pm

Thinking about buying one for my girls. They shoot my Savage FV-SR and they love it but it is a bit heavy for the 8 year old. I think this would be perfect for them.

  36. Dangerous Old Guy DOG on November 30, 2021 at 11:09 pm

Great job dad. I took my kids shooting and now looking forward to taking my grandson.

  37. Johnny RC on November 30, 2021 at 11:10 pm

Excellent work teaching shooting fundamentals. My oldest knows it well, and the youngest is just turning old enough to get into it. So far as the grouping, it’s probably an ammo issue. Rimfires have a specific taste, and I bet if you find an ammo that the rifle likes, I bet those groups cut at least in half. My CZ 455 match rifle likes SK Match 22lr ammo, which runs about 1/2 moa, vs an ammo it does not like will run 1.5-2 MOA. Even the Lapua midas didn’t do all that well compared to the SK (thank the lord..$$$). One of the guys I shoot matches with, the lucky Sunnuva gun, his match rifle like BLAZER…. yes, you read that right. Shoots just under 1/2" with freaking Blazer ammo….. Anyway, good video, cheers!

  38. Jake_ Thomas on November 30, 2021 at 11:11 pm

I’m 12 now but when I was 9 or 10 I got one in woodgrain i still use it but now i have a shotgun to hunt with, I have a scope and a leather strap on mine

I bought the rascal for my son on his 5th birthday. Awesome starter rifle and I love that it also has mounts for a scope (he’ll be getting that for his 7th birthday).

Looking for a 22. rifle to buy and teach my kid to shoot with. Would this be a good fit for a female who is 19 yrs old, 5’6 and about 110-120 lbs?
