Taurus Troubles 650CIA .357

Taurus Troubles 650CIA .357

Having problems with a new Taurus 650CIA .357 magnum. I sent it back to Taurus but it doesn’t look like they actually repaired the problem. I’m asking if anyone has any experience with Taurus as far as customer service and repair work.

Since recording this, I did put just a couple rounds (maybe a dozen or so) through this revolver without any problems but I’m still not sure.

Thanks for watching

Oh I agree Bob. I am dying to get it back out to the range.
I already have 3 boxes of .357 magnum and 4 boxes of .38 special for my next range day.
I plan to put her through her paces before even considering carrying her.
Thanks for watching and for your comments.

Thanks David, I’m really hoping the problems are behind me. I’ve only been able to put a dozen or two rounds through it since getting it back. So far so good. I won’t be happy until I run a couple of boxes of .357 magnum through it without a single glitch. At that point I will be "cautiously optimistic". LOL
    Thanks for watching.
    God Bless

Had problems with my new 650 after 2 rounds it failed to fire. Sent it to Taurus and was repaired. When I recieved it back it failed again with the same issue. It was repaired again. Both failures were with 357 and the recoil is tough on the hands. I put 75 rounds thru it with 38+P and have no issues so far. Recoil is much nicer.

same problem I had with the 605 poly , only shoot .38 special now , still has problems with the cylinder and I’ve shot over 500 rounds through mine

    Howdy

I have a Taurus Model 44m purchased about 8 weeks ago.I have fired about 70 rounds 44 special 30 rounds 44 mag and it appears that i have some kind of issue. My last few rounds that i fired were 44 special and each time i cocked the hammer it got harder and harder to cock.I have taken the gun home and cleaned it well and when i open the cylinder and close it again the gun acts normal until you cock it about 5 times then it gets really stiff again.Open the cylinder again and again it is fine for the first couple of pulls then it gets tight again.I hate to send it in and be without it for 4 to 8 weeks if there is something i could try ideas please.

Was shooting .357 out of one of these at an indoor range .. a guy from 3 bays over came over to ask what the hell am I shooting?! .. hellofa flash and bang outa this one for sure. It’s a great drawer or safe gun.

I had the same issues with mine, i sent it back twice. It would shoot 10 15 rounds and it would jam up. First time i sent it back they changed the springs i have no idea why, but offcourse they tested and fired 15 rounds, and said it was fine. I got it to the range on the 16 shot again same problem, i looked down the barrel and the barrel was missaligned with the cylander by about 1/16 of an inch, i have no clue how they missed that but they did. It seems to be ok know after the second time. IT still happens every once in a while especialy when it gets really hot. I just think this particular model is just a dud. I definately wouldnt buy it if i could do it over.

Hey hoss, do you know if S&W J frame grips fit on the 650?

  9. MidwestMiddleClass on June 12, 2023 at 5:06 am

Well, personally, I’m not impressed. After a couple shots of a BRAND NEW revolver, I had to send it back to the manufacturer. But even after they "fixed it", it failed again after just a couple more shots.
Once it’s "fixed" again, I plan to sell it or trade it in ASAP. I’ve already replaced it with a Ruger SP101 and haven’t looked back. Their warranty is awesome so long as you don’t mind having to use it.
Will I ever buy Taurus again? Doubtful.

How’d it go ? I just got one recently

  14. tedkenne on June 12, 2023 at 5:14 am

Cylinder "swelling" is very common with Taurus revolvers. Softer steel used causing swelling and cylinder lock up. Never a problem with S&W or Ruger.

  15. MidwestMiddleClass on June 12, 2023 at 5:15 am

Hey 850doc, I appreciate the input. I agree that the primers may be part of the problem. That makes sense. I know that when I remove the spent cases, the problem goes away and I can re-insert certain spent cases to replicate the problem. I don’t remember inspecting the primers back when I was dealing with this issue so I can’t say if that was the problem, plus I was using basic factory ammo.. But I will be checking that out ASAP. Thanks again for your input.

  16. 850doc on June 12, 2023 at 5:16 am

I have a 85UL 38+p and a judge, I have had no trouble with the judge, it is the nicest trigger I have on a gun out of the box. I did have a similar problem with my 85UL. I would fire a shot and the cylinder would drag, fire another shot even more drag. It turns out each time I would fire a round the primer would unseat just a little and would drag in the gun. The clearance between the cylinder and the gun of a Taurus is much closer than a S&W so a little unseating will cause drag and jam the gun

Mine was doing the same thing and i have the same gun! Cost me $74 to ship to taurus to get it repaired. Havent shot it yet since i got it back.

  18. MidwestMiddleClass on June 12, 2023 at 5:17 am

Glad to hear you got it fixed.
I have since gotten it back and things are working well.
I’ve run a box or 2 of .357 Magnum through it without any problems.
Thanks for the input and thanks for watching

Taurus problems are easy to diagnose. Look on the right side of the frame. If is says “ TAURUS “, that’s your problem.

  20. We Chia Lee on June 12, 2023 at 5:20 am

Find out the problem, the firing pin is loose, causing to catch on the empty cylinder to stop cycling.

  21. Michael Sadrerafi on June 12, 2023 at 5:22 am

I just got my revolver back today and they had to replace the trigger and transfer bar. I’m taking it out to shoot tomorrow and hope this problem never occurs again.

  22. MidwestMiddleClass on June 12, 2023 at 5:22 am

+Jim- Hamradio – Glad I could help. You will LOVE that 1911. No comparison between that and a Taurus revolver for sure.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.

  23. MidwestMiddleClass on June 12, 2023 at 5:24 am

I’d thought about doing that, but I wanted to make sure it was a keeper before I made any mods to it.
    Thanks for watching.

  24. Leon Nygren on June 12, 2023 at 5:26 am

Mine has not had that problem. My problem was after firing about 20 rounds of 357 one of the clyinder holes when getting hot would lock the casing…I ended filing carefully a high spot in the hole. So this is my opinion. …you get what you pay for… Metal tempering and quality has a unseen thing with less expensive guns. Why are some guns so expensive. …well one reason is selected and tested metal stock before ever starting to manufacture and then to the real craftsman . I think the Taurus for the price is overall good….but their metals …especially these stainless steel revolvers are not that good. So no matter how good the design. …the foundation of the quality metal is not. So maybe 3 out 10 come out with good steel….certainly my cylinder is poor…might get a new clyinder.

thats a nice looking little pistol brother, sorry bout the issues but the good thing is they have lifetime warrinty, have owned a few 357s 9mm and 45 and never had a problem. Hopefully you now have it ironed out, but….i wouldnt carry it for protection till you have at least 250 rounds through it without issues.

I too have problems with my Taurus 44 magnum 6.5 inch barrel, Model 2-440069. I got it last week on 5/25/2018. I just put the 44 magnum snap cap on and just to test on. It was working good for a couple of days, and as of today 5/29/2018. My Taurus 44 magnum had cylinder problems too. The trigger only pull half way, I tried the single shot, it did the same, pulling half way. Clean it with solvent and lube her up with oil, it did cycle sometimes and sometimes it didn’t. My first and last Taurus revolver purchase. I will test her out on the range, but for now, I do not know if it’s worth the money to fix the gun yet.

  29. Frostyeveryday on June 12, 2023 at 5:36 am

I have one. Bought it brand new quite a few years ago. I haven’t had a single issue out of it. I’ve put well over 600 rounds through it. I even had a gunsmith take it apart and lube it up. I love my pistol and trust it so much it is my EDC.

  30. stanly steemer on June 12, 2023 at 5:37 am

Glad I sold my 605 before I ever used it. Just heard to many negative reviews after the fact. Figured where there’s that much smoke there’s bound to be fire.

  31. eqlzr2 on June 12, 2023 at 5:37 am

I’m a very experienced firearms owner, and I own several Taurus firearms. My experience has taught me that I would never buy a Taurus firearm as a beginner, or someone with only limited firearms experience. Too many issues can/have popped up, even after carefully examining and checking the firearm before purchase. That being said, some of the Taurus firearms I have had are very excellent guns.

  32. Design Transportation on June 12, 2023 at 5:38 am

my Taurus 44 magnum did that, sent it to the manufacturer and they "fixed it", can’t get 20 rounds through it and it is locking up again. I will say my Taurus 357 magnum has been flawless.

  33. Patriot Sons of Liberty on June 12, 2023 at 5:40 am

I have the exact same gun. The exact same thing happened to me. It took about 6 months to get it back from Taurus. Well, I’ve put about 150 rounds through it and yesterday, the same thing happened again. Not sure what to do about it now. I guess I’ll just send it back to get fixed. I’ve lost confidence in it as an EDC weapon.

  34. Ron Brumleve on June 12, 2023 at 5:42 am

I have the same but I haven’t had any problems with it at all.

  35. MidwestMiddleClass on June 12, 2023 at 5:44 am

@James Franco – You are so right. I have done that very thing and haven’t looked back! Thanks for watching and for the comment.

  36. SmilingSam on June 12, 2023 at 5:44 am

I had the same problem a few years ago with a S&W revolver. I was told the ammo I was using was "hot" and caused the cylinder to swell…and the little piece just below the cylinder (but in the frame) where it rises up and enters the notches of the cylinder to "lock it up"…all they did was shave the piece down a bit to give it more clearance…it worked like a charm from then on.

It’s a nice looking revolver, sorry I have no experience with the Taurus’ and it’s a bummer yours is giving you problems.
    Peace

I just purchased a Taurus 650CIA .357 Magnum and I’ve had the exact same problem. I’ve put 15 rounds through the gun and now I can’t even get the cylinder open. I’m and very dissatisfied with Taurus and will probably never buy one again.

  39. Nedly on June 12, 2023 at 5:46 am

I’ve got the 7 shot hammerless. Had it for about 10 years and only had one issue with the cylinder jamming. I just happened to be using different ammo on that occasion. So I went back to the Winchesters and never had a problem. I believe these models that Taurus produced is pretty particular on the ammo type. Hope everything got squared away with yours

  40. James Franco on June 12, 2023 at 5:50 am

A solution for your problem would be to buy a ruger sp101 lol

  41. Walter Momma on June 12, 2023 at 5:50 am

Had the same problem. Cylinder would lock up. Sent it back and returned in 4 days. Lightened the trigger. Ran 150 rounds of 38p. Works like a charm now. Had the flutes on the cylinder polished. Looks and shoots great!!
