I have a 1958, pre model 29, mint condition that I do shoot on occasion.
These are the most under rated revolvers ever made. Nothing like a clean, crisp smith.
Is anyone having problems with the cartridges expanding so much? To the point where I have to use extra force on the ejector rod? Im using 19.6g of h110 with 300 grain projectiles

I am the owner and was asked to clear up the mystery.
While the gun did shoot (and well) it did have some issues. The primary issue was when shooting magnums, the cases would expand and could not get ejected from the cylinder, we had to ram them out. The cylinder release was also very “sticky.”
Because of those, along with other minor issues, I sent it to Smith&Wesson to see what they could do. Evidently the original cylinder had some issues because they replaced it with their improved version. I still have the original cylinder (they sent it back with the gun) but I certainly prefer the full functionality now!

I like unique powder but have not been able to buy any in sometime also no large pistol primers, love my 29-2 8 3/8” barrel and 4” barrel also my 629 4”, I have an Alaskan backpacker IV 2 1/2” barrel, pretty wicked to shoot with the lightweight alloy frame

I own a 29-2 also and your video reminded me of something I’ve been curious about for a while but have yet to address, primarily because my 29-2 doesn’t see much time outside of the safe (I have 629s also, so they see all the work these days).
The revolver’s timing is good as far as I can determine. The cylinder locks up before the hammer, etc. However, the hammer simply will not "stage" and it locks up just a smidge after the cylinder does. In other words, once the cylinder locks up, the hammer seems to only move another 1/16th of an inch or so before being fully cocked. This seems too close to me and I’m concerned the gun is going to be knocked out of time if not adjusted. And when I say the hammer won’t stage, I mean you can pull the trigger fully without it ever feeling like the hammer wants to pause at the point where cylinder locks up, it’ll just pull straight through no matter how slowly you pull the trigger.
I feel like work – a trigger job – must have been done to the gun prior to my owning it. My 629s (I have 2) both stage when the cylinder locks. The gun has never presented any issues but I wonder if this might be a recipe for issues down the line – timing issues and whatnot.
Any advice?

Hey "Jorge", or is that GEORGE?! Very nice video AND close-up shots of the Smith! Nothing beats some "LUSTY" close-up shots of the firearm being tested!!! For sure, the Model 29 is the most GORGEOUS .44 magnum of all time! I’d still prefer the Ruger Redhawk though because of its superior strength & triple lockup!! I always wonder about the grips on the S&W, why they’re so big at the bottom while that’s where our shortest finger ("pinkie"?) goes! You’d think the grips would be smallest at the bottom! Maybe it’s better for "cold cocking"! When I had my Ruger Super Blackhawk many years ago, my bullet mould for the lead bullet was #429421. I’d load 22 grains of H2400 powder for my max load, a salty smelling flake powder.Those were wonderful gun days in my life!! Thanks "mein freund"!!!

Another one of your awesome videos. One small correction though, 2400 was known as Hercules 2400. And H designation is for Hodgdon powders. Alliant is the new manufacture of the old Hercules 2400.
The reason the barrel is pinned but no recessed cylinder is due to it being a transitional model before switching to the -3 designation. Made between late 1981 and early 1982.
Im going on some backcountry backpacking in the summer, and looking for a good self-defense gun for predators. Is this .44 magnum a good choice for that purpose?

Beautiful revolver and great video. I have always been a Ruger revolver owner and just recently got a S&W Model 69. My first S&W and forst 44Mag revolver. Pretty sure I will mostly be shooting 44 Spl in it though..LOL
Love the spiraling, spewing, top can in slo-mo! Great shot… pistol AND camera! Not long ago I got a 629… stainless version. Man, that’s a fun gun but it’ll beat up your hand! You mentioned Mr. Keith. My friend was traveling out west and realized he was close to the Keth homestead. He got to meet him. Chat for a while. They even went to the back lot and shot pistols together! You know, for some people, things just happen …. beats all.

Is your left ear still ringing? 8:58 I did the same thing shooting my .357 magnum, only both ears. I forgot my to put on my ears muffs and my ears rang for about 8 hours!

In Fallout 4, they produced a weapon called the Western Revolver, which is modeled after this gun, including it’s low guttural sound. It’s now the most powerful handgun in the game. I can see that this is a very dependable handgun that has withstood the test of time. A beautiful piece.
Another cost cutting move on the 3rd change was eliminating the high luster blueing, as well as narrowing the trigger
