Savage Axis Rifle: Is this $349 rifle any good?

Savage Axis Rifle: Is this $349 rifle any good?

The Savage Axis rifle is inexpensive, and in our testing it proved to be quite accurate. The build quality is decent, and the rifle is dependable, but we wish it had Savage’s Accutrigger installed on this cheaper version of the rifle.

I have two of these. A 223 and a 243. I think I paid about $250 for them at Cabellas on sale. I upgraded them a little by putting good scopes on them and a timney trigger on the 223. I really like them and find that for deer hunting I have been using the 243 more often than my old 30-06.

Must be made for Occasional hunter, and not competitive shooters.. I like the grandchildren to see that red on fire.!!. Many recoil pads are designed to grab your coat and not get on the shoulder.. this one designed to slide right up there high easy next to your cheek where you can focus quickly down the scope..yeah $350 is great, a little work on the forearm and a nice $300 trigger…..

A little late. But I bought an axis in 350 legend. Wow what a great round. I put in an mccarbo kit and it’s truly awesome cheap rifle that 350 legend round is amazing. The new Savage stocks make a world of difference. Sub moa. Also they have a great new mag as well

Bought my son the Axis 2 in 243win with the Bushnell scope package. $299 from Rkguns at the time. Shoots much better than a $300 gun should. Wouldn’t personally buy one without the Accu-trigger tho.

I bought the savage 270 combo… my scope glass fell apart after about 50 rounds

2021 update. They’ve redone the stock and beefed up the stock. It’s far superior to the old stock. The forend has a much thicker sidewall. The internal webbing is now crisscross versus the horizontal webbing in the old one. The mag is also a spring button versus that crappy clip. Also mcarbo has a 20 buck trigger upgrade that is great

If you don’t want to buy another trigger for it you can cut two coils off the trigger spring to lighten up the pull.

  23. Red Rhino Outdoors on November 4, 2021 at 10:11 pm

Good rifles 👏.. Not the best as some like to think 😆.. Remember it’s a budget rifle .. I prefer ruger American rifles around $50 more

  24. Jason S on November 4, 2021 at 10:14 pm

20 bucks and 10 min fixes the trigger

  25. Destiny Troll on November 4, 2021 at 10:16 pm

I’ve had my Savage Axis 6.5 Creedmore for about a year now and just got the 30-06 for Moose Hunting here in Alaska. I’m saving up for a nicer 30-06 or 7mm Remington Mag. It’s a great way to get into Moose Hunting though 🙂

  26. Damian Moskos on November 4, 2021 at 10:16 pm

Got the original savage design 22-250, dropped in a timney trigger and better redfield revenge 3-9×40 scope, its pretty good shooter now or at least better.

  27. Steve Haines on November 4, 2021 at 10:18 pm

1 moa at 100 yards is absolutely fantastic for darn near any gun. Especially a $300 rifle shooting factory loads.

It does not get much better

  28. Steve Mongeau on November 4, 2021 at 10:21 pm

I have one, the fact that you got one for your son WOW, WOW He will love you for many things…. Mine has a muzzle break. However, we feel the power of a .270 win. Good luck, love your son huge. Eat off the fat of the land. Praise God.

A guy is trading me this rifle plus $150 for my Glock 43. Im ready to drop as many deer as possible.

  32. Bravo 2p on November 4, 2021 at 10:24 pm

I generally am exclusively a Ruger person, but my wife bought me a Savage Axis for Christmas a couple years ago in .22 250 for groundhogs and fox. I put an ATN 4k pro 3-14 on it and I love the gun. It is my go-to rifle for everything except bigger game. It shoots sub-MOA @ 100 yards consistantly. I have no complaints.

  33. Chris Jones on November 4, 2021 at 10:25 pm

Looking for my first 308 for F class shooting… is this rifle a good choice? Maybe with a better stock, glass and a trigger job?

  34. Glenn Oliver on November 4, 2021 at 10:25 pm

Maybe a new product! The light up safety… maybe do in a day glow or Iridium

  35. Meh 2 on November 4, 2021 at 10:25 pm

Rounding off the top corner of recoil pad would help prevent hanging up on coats, clothes and jackets when mounting.

Kind of a gay guy demonstration. But thanks for the review.

  37. Randall on November 4, 2021 at 10:26 pm

Hey now Remington isn’t that bad lol. My Rem 700 is very accurate and feels well made but that’s just my rifle who knows about other ones.

  38. Filip Vadaszi on November 4, 2021 at 10:28 pm

I love this rifle i bought the 308. Looks slick too

  39. Fernando Garip on November 4, 2021 at 10:28 pm

Out of the box I had 1/2" groupings at 100yds with the stock optics. This is a great gun for the $.

  42. ROBERT Boyd on November 4, 2021 at 10:31 pm

With rebate , they are now on sale for $269. the triggers suck 6 lb on all the ones I’ve checked, their extraction problems are well known. putting in the 9/64 ball seemed to help mine, and a Mc carbo trigger spring gets it down to a bit over 2 lb. so by rebuilding the gun, it is a decent shooter, the Thompson Center Compass is a far better gun , if you could still find them

  43. rwentz 10 on November 4, 2021 at 10:33 pm

i am interested in this gun in 243

  44. Ken Fischmann on November 4, 2021 at 10:33 pm

I have one in .270 and love it, I sold a Ruger American in the same caliber because once in a while the factory puts out a lemon and that Ruger should have had a yellow stock and I like Rugers. I have another American in 450 Bushmaster that shoots lights out, cloverleafs those big slugs at 100 but this Savage with my handloads shoots routinely 1 moa or under. My trigger is also in the 4-4.5 lb. range but is very crisp and breaks cleanly. I bought it used for a stop gap from a friend for $125 and after shooting it I ordered a 260 Remington barrel with a 1:8 twist for it and a 4×12 Vortex scope. It only takes a half hour to change the barrel and with the long action I can seat those 143 gr. Hornady ELD-x’s all the way out with no intrusion into the powder column and add a little more powder to the case. I did epoxy fill the front of the stock to stiffen it up, worked like a charm. Who needs a 6.5 PRC, my Savage handles all duties no problem.

  45. Kyle Banks on November 4, 2021 at 10:34 pm

The stock is a peice of shit. I own one. Its tupperware. And the bolt releass isnt that bad. You can let go of the triggee asoon as you push that button. Just need the triggee held to pushthe button

  46. Jacob Beasley on November 4, 2021 at 10:37 pm

Bullshit my 308. Savage mark 2 WIN. HAS NO PROBLEMS.fuck off

  47. Sgt Redneck on November 4, 2021 at 10:38 pm

I love how you take shots at Remington. Remington has a much better action. A much better bolt. No sticking at all. And the magazine? The Savage is awful compared to Remington (783,770,710). Remington has a much better barrel on the 783. You want to give kudos for metal "sling things". Ok lol

  48. John Dowd on November 4, 2021 at 10:39 pm

Plz don’t shoot like that again…unless you like to get scoped…

  49. john blackbird on November 4, 2021 at 10:39 pm

    Nice gun

I got one and it’s very precise, sighted and test on 25 YD, 50y YD, 100YD & 200 YD, I was amazed how accurate this rifle is, the scope is cheap one (weaver) and it’s good and easy to sight, the only thing i didn’t light was the magazine doesn’t lock well, gets loose and that result in not taking the bullet in (you would have to check it with every bullet) by the 2nd bullet it’s loose enough to be pushed again and that would end up the problem however, there was a small part in the magazine that i pulled and it fixed it, also the scope in the 200 YD was difficult to look in
