What are good, hot rounds in 454 casull?

  2. El Rico on August 5, 2022 at 7:47 pm

why why why is this Toklat not made in 44 magnum ??? Ruger… are you asleep

  3. Bennett Guns on August 5, 2022 at 7:48 pm

Do you edit the comments on these? One of your videos says you own a Toklat the other one denies it? I’ve posted before about my problem with the Double D Guides holster and now can’t find it???

  4. Gun Sam _Revolver Aficionado_ on August 5, 2022 at 7:56 pm

I never understood why S&W never put out a standalone .454 revolver. My only thought is that the N frame is too small and the X frame is too big, so they just focus on the X frame .460 production.

  5. InSight Freedom on August 5, 2022 at 7:57 pm

That is a big boy gun for sure.

  6. Modern Mountain Man on August 5, 2022 at 7:57 pm

I am going to go Ruger Alaskan in 454 Casull. I am looking at both the Kenai Chest rig and the Sourdough Pancake holster.

  7. Bushcraft North of 60 on August 5, 2022 at 7:58 pm

Nice piece! Looks rather effective for bears.

  8. Dave Jan on August 5, 2022 at 8:00 pm

As USUAL, More MISinformation. Fact, longer bbls kick less/deliver MORE of the cartridges potential. FACT, in a bear encounter your adrenalin levels will soar & the weight/recoil will never be felt. FACT, a stupid flapover holster slows down your draw when nanoseconds count. FACT, the 44 kicks harder w the same weight/velocity bullet. Dont you EVER get tired of spewing out crap you have NO experience in Pukie boy?? You could handle the 454 just fine when scared shitless in a bear attack. Been there, done that. And Im smaller than U are. (5’8"/ 130 lbs & 70 years old.) You can also jury rig a cheap Uncle Mikes holster sideways behind you to put the guns weight evenly distributed across/ just below both hips behind you on your belt. A short strap w a second belthook connected to the holsters nose works just fine & is easily reachable. Dont have to spend a fortune to be SMART. Once you get used to a backdraw its fast & keeps the gun out of your way in the front. Even w a backpack covering it its still easy to reach/pull & shoot. If it were NOT for its weight Id carry mine in a military low leg holster but its NOT light. Thanks to a fellow viewer I got my Ruger super Redhawk 454 Casull w the 7 inch bbl & its a dream to shoot. WAY better than my 44 w lots more power too w LESS recoil. Would like the 460 or 500 but would need a wheelbarrow to carry THAT tank around. Mans GOTTA know his limitations. BTW, for all of Pukie boys viewers, a double action is WAY better than any single action just as the 45/70 lever beats ANY bolt gun for speed in a bear/ or multiple bear attack. It might be a tad heavier but its the life/death difference when the SHTF in bear country. Better to have it & not need it than NEED it & not have it. Old bushmans saying. "THE BUSH ONLY ALLOWS YOU 1 MISTAKE because its the LAST mistake you will ever make." Keep up your vids Pukie boy! Your soooo much fun to pick on. Age/experience beats youth/ inexperience/ stupid ego any day. 😁

Why do you recommend “really hot loads”? I would assume you would recommend heavy hard cast lead or a punch type bullet. With a 340-355 grain bullet what do you consider really hot. If you can shoot through with 1200 FPS what do you gain going 1600 FPS other than flatter trajectory and a lot more recoil? You don’t need flat trajectory for a close up defense round. You can make a 454 very hard to shoot trying to push it at near its limit and what do you gain? Thinking hotter or faster is better isn’t necessarily even close to correct. Now if you have a different opinion, I’d like to hear it.

  10. Jeffrey Locke on August 5, 2022 at 8:01 pm

    I own a S&W magnum X-frame 460 V with a 5 inch muzzlebrake equipped barrel. as well as a 6.5 inch S&W magnum X-frame revolver with a semi-lug ported barrel. Both weigh just slightly over 60 ounces.

  11. Branislav Bucha on August 5, 2022 at 8:02 pm

i really agree but… I saw some probs in hickok 45 video with Toklat 454. what do you think about that chuke?

  12. BC Country Guy on August 5, 2022 at 8:03 pm

the .454 Casull is the best all round cartridge for Alaska, particularly the Taurus Raging Bull Judge in 454 Casull for grouse to grizz .

  13. Smith N. Wesson on August 5, 2022 at 8:04 pm

If Ruger would come out with a 4.25 to 4.5 inch barrel, Toklat style version of the Ruger Super Redhawk in 44 Magnum…..it would sell like crazy!!!!

  14. Xyz Sing on August 5, 2022 at 8:04 pm

Why not sw 460? And why did you sell your sw 500 magnum 4 inch revolver?

  15. Harlem139Convent1 on August 5, 2022 at 8:07 pm

Combine the tolkat with randy garrett’s hammerhead ammo, and u got a winner!!

  16. Carson Larick on August 5, 2022 at 8:08 pm

When you’re around 900 plus pound bears you’re not going to care if the gun is bulky. Trust me. Even the 454 starts to seem small.

  17. Nonja Ninja on August 5, 2022 at 8:08 pm

Why did they have to make it so ugly?

  18. Propelled on August 5, 2022 at 8:08 pm

I prefer the .480 Ruger with 400 grain hard cast. Follow-up shots are faster, easier to shoot.

  19. poor fat man on August 5, 2022 at 8:09 pm

I agree with you Ruger Czar really reliable and very accurate

  20. Timothy Wilson on August 5, 2022 at 8:10 pm

I own a SW 460 XVR 5.5 in and it is Superior quality. Rugers are also known for rugged durability and high quality. I also have a Redhawk 44 mag. I like the Toklat model but HATE the Flat Sided barrel! It’s just me but I would rather have a round Bull barrel!

  21. Francisco Chiriboga on August 5, 2022 at 8:10 pm

Everybody seems to have put the .44 Magnum aside, including yourself. Why, if it still is a very powerful and versatile caliber, more so on both counts than the 10 mm, which nowadays has a strong following?

  22. John Wesley on August 5, 2022 at 8:11 pm

    👍

  23. Wayne Smith on August 5, 2022 at 8:12 pm

I have the Alaskan in .454 and after having it a while I asked myself, "Self, why didn’t Ruger make this in a 4" model with a full length heavy barrel profile?" The Toklat is just too damned ugly for me. If they made that 4′ heavy barreled version, I’d buy it.

  24. The Kentucky Patriot on August 5, 2022 at 8:13 pm

.454 Casull is my all time favorite caliber! I would not want to carry it but for the range against water jugs it is the ultimate entertainment for a hillbilly like me 😀

  25. sour mash on August 5, 2022 at 8:13 pm

its not really how big you are Chuke, its all about technique, grip and control over the weapon.ive seen a little girl shoot 50 AE.all day like it was nothing.just work on your grip bro and really get behind that firearm with some authority.

  26. MrGhendri on August 5, 2022 at 8:13 pm

Just got a TOLKAT misspelled. Could it be worth an early retirement?

  27. CaveDweller on August 5, 2022 at 8:15 pm

So the Toklat specific version is it discontinued?

  28. Troy on August 5, 2022 at 8:16 pm

If i ever get one of these, i will probably mostly shoot warm 45 Colt loads through it. A 275 or 300 gr Keith SWC at 1200 fps or so should work well. I agree, a 44 Mag version would be nice. I like 5" revolvers.

  29. Nicholas Thomas on August 5, 2022 at 8:18 pm

They have one of those for sale at Wild West Guns in Alaska, the only one I’ve seen for under a grand

  30. Big Stud on August 5, 2022 at 8:22 pm

Thanks for covering this topic several times Chuke. I live in bear country, and always try to stay up to date on what works.

You’ve done lots of testing and posting in various calibers, want you to know, your research has not gone unappreciated. You’ve helped answer a few questions I wondered about.

Plus you’re just plain fun to watch. Great attitude, stay cool Chukes!!!

  31. black rain on August 5, 2022 at 8:22 pm

    My favorite revolver

  32. 3 River Blades on August 5, 2022 at 8:25 pm

Want one. Hard to find. Congrats!

  33. Harlem139Convent1 on August 5, 2022 at 8:25 pm

Didn’t u do a video saying the smith and wesson .500 was the best?

  34. Rob 10ring on August 5, 2022 at 8:26 pm

Great gun! I’m 6’0 and just over 180 lbs.. I have the Toklat. It’s a beast with the heavy Buffalo Bore, but still manageable. Not many brown bears in utah😉, but I’ve carried it in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, even in Yellowstone. I wish they made a .44 in this configuration. It’s my favorite big bore caliber and I can go into any store and find a wider variety of loads. I’d like to hunt an elk with my Toklat.

  35. Rick Meadows on August 5, 2022 at 8:27 pm

    It’s not a pistol. It’s a revolver….😳

  36. Jared White on August 5, 2022 at 8:28 pm

What makes the Toklat difference from the super red hawk?

  37. Johnny Half on August 5, 2022 at 8:29 pm

    A great 60s 70 engine 454 !

  38. Alaskan Ballistics on August 5, 2022 at 8:29 pm

This is the best revolver for Alaska… don’t be a pansy about carrying a big gun on your chest.

  39. Ron Fleck on August 5, 2022 at 8:31 pm

Exactly my setup. Use it down here in lower 48 when hiking around our cabin in the Big Hole Valley of southwestern Montana. The wife carries the Glock 20 (10mm) with the Diamond D chest holster (rides real nice I must admit:) Bang Bang

  40. David Shaffer on August 5, 2022 at 8:35 pm

You don’t need a hand cannon like the 454 a good Ruger 44 mag with buffalo bore or something like that will do just fine

  41. BJ9564 Lee on August 5, 2022 at 8:35 pm

hey Chucke 🙂 awesome video i like the Ruger 454 Casull but if i choose my .454 Casull i’ll go with the Taurus Raging Judge 😀

  42. Rick Meadows on August 5, 2022 at 8:35 pm

Um, um, um, um, um, um ah, ah, um, ah….🙄. Dude, you need to learn public speaking. Um, um, um, ah, ah, um….

  43. Bentley Murphree on August 5, 2022 at 8:41 pm

Toklat was the name of a bear movie.

  44. Rick Meadows on August 5, 2022 at 8:42 pm

    I own one. Love it.

  45. SmokyMountainOutdoorsman on August 5, 2022 at 8:43 pm

I need this gun in my life. I held this side by side with the 3.5 inch smith and wesson .460 and the quality of the ruger was so much better in my opinion. The trigger on the S&W sucked.

  46. Heavy_Forge on August 5, 2022 at 8:44 pm

Hell yeah that’s a bad ass revolver! Been eyeing one at big rays.

  47. CrossingFist on August 5, 2022 at 8:44 pm

If I was going to get a Ruger in a "bigger than 44 mag" cartridge, I would lean to the .480 Ruger. Lower pressure and recoil than 454, more mass and diameter, and handgun hunters report spectacular results on large game.
