Next Generation Squad Weapon: Automatic Rifle | Shooting, Field Strip, and Performance | Textron

Next Generation Squad Weapon: Automatic Rifle | Shooting, Field Strip, and Performance | Textron

This review is of a prototype for military use only, and is not commercially available.

Last fall, we gave everyone a seek peek at Textron’s submission for the NGSW contract; including the battle rifle and squad automatic rifle. The video was just a overview and left everyone asking to see more, like field stripping and loading/firing. You asked and we listened.

The NGSW contract was down selected to three companies… of course, like everyone, we wanted to see first hand what the next generation will look like. Textron Systems gave us a rare first look at their system; allowing us to film 48 hours of the Tactical Rifleman Instructors putting both their battle rifle and automatic rifle (SAW) through a series of extremely impressive tests.

This video, we are going to dig a little deeper into the Automatic Rifle (replacement for the SAW). THis puppy is lighter than the current SAW, is select-fire, and hits with more energy than a M240 with this new 6.8 ammo.

This 6.8mm CT system is awesome. While the actual capabilities are confidential, we tried to capture the spirit of the capabilities in this video. We hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed filming it. We also want to thank Textron and the US Army for allowing us to share this 6.8mm NGSW system with our viewers. Strength & Honor, TR.

It’s nice to know that the use of a battery’s not for the operating system cuz that was everyone’s thought when people first started hearing about the weapon

im pretty sure with this ammunition you get less conductive heat from the round to the barrel since the round does not conduct heat to the barrel or frame. Brass conducts heat and plastic is an insulator but I wonder if they introduce quick barrel swap just since people wont trust it if it doesn’t have it. I wonder how much they tested it in extreme heat.

No barrel change and it’s a long gun for such a short barrel

  32. CalCustom on October 29, 2021 at 11:19 pm

How do you swap barrels? You can’t have a machine gun without the ability to swap out hot barrels. You’d think with all the money and R&D they spent on this they wouldn’t miss something that fundamentally basic.

  33. Doug Poulton on October 29, 2021 at 11:21 pm

The only thing that would be good for is assaulting a roach coach. Hit and run, leave the weapon behind. It wouldn’t take much for it to become a crew served weapon with everyone in the squad carrying three or four of them in a golf bag. After firing 500 rounds you just throw the whole gun away and get a new one out of your golf bag. Does this make sense to anyone but a bureaucrat in the Pentagon getting a big kickback from the lobbyists?

  34. Neruil on October 29, 2021 at 11:22 pm

That’s my friend is a, fully semi automatic with 30 caliber belt freed mag. Shooting 100 rounds in 2 sec..

What’s the heat management plan for this weapon. πŸ€” older 60’s and saw ect you could cool bbl with a cloth soaked in water to extend run time before bbl changes. What we doin here.

  36. eric bee on October 29, 2021 at 11:24 pm

    I was a saw gunner, 11M INFANTRY…this is a major improvement, nice!

Does it really need a quick change barrel if the chamber isn’t attached to the barrel?

Carl,Thank You for the video. If Textrons 6.8 Rifle and SAW are just Prototypes where can I see a video of the Versions they have submitted for the Trail Competition? I’d like to see You do a video on Knights Ultra-Lite LAMG and AMG. Like the NEGEV it’s offered in 5.56mm and 7.62mm. Did I mention the NEGEV??? The have a Factory in the U.S.A. now. They must have a LMG or two they can spare for a video.

  45. rastenborg on October 29, 2021 at 11:31 pm

I could see a limited use weapon in 338 or 6.8.
Do you really want soldiers shooting 400 rounds of ammunition? SFU..
The 308 AR-15 platform can be adapted with a barrel change for specialized situations. It is not a do all cartridge. Nor is the 338. The obvious targets are Russian soldiers with bullet "proof" square foot plates front and rear. The fighting position or DePuy calls for flank engagement.
The 338 works well at long range while the Fifty is not an antipersonnel weapon due to agreements. But a 49 caliber or less weapon with barrel change would be. Infantry of all kinds should be able to use a variety of weapons. Yet they end up firing qualification and zero less than 100 rounds a year. The weapons require higher levels of qualification. It makes sense to add specialty elements to the squad or attachments as needed. Royal Court Potsdam (Bismarck ) Ulan- Garde.
