The new Moog Taurus 3 vs. Taurus 1 from the year 1978
The demo shows the 3 legendary Taurus 1 preset sounds TAURUS, TUBA, BASS and a Variable Preset sound RESO-BASS in comparsion to the Taurus 3 .
No external effects added!
This video demo is not a musical statement, only demonstration of the sound possibilities of the instrument.

in a live set no one will see the difference. especially if they are not loud enough like on the current genesis last domino tour, they are using taurus 3, they could have used an old elka organ pedal and you couldnt tell, they were totally blurried in the mix. but in the studio, nothing will replace my taurus 1. i can have a very similar sound to the taurus 3 with my arturia mini V software so its not worth the price.
The Taurus 1 calibration sounds off. did you calibrate it correctly.
To my ears, the T1 has more bottom end and slightly less mids (assuming that the filters on both are set at a similar value). My idea of getting more bottom end from the T3 would entail getting either a graphic EQ pedal meant for bass guitars and cut out some of the mids, or a parametric eq and follow the same procedure.
Our T1 was bought from a man who sold it to buy the T3…..for the midi……fool! 😀
Are U kidding ? T1 of course!!!
I preferred the T3. More defined. Yes the T1 was warmer, deeper and more complex, but I found it mushy.
I’m not a huge fan of all the polarity you guys are showing. I don’t think one sounds better or worse than the other. They’re both big, hefty, expensive saw wave monsters. If I had to choose between one or the other, I’d go with the 3, purely for the added functionality of MIDI.
absolutely amazing!
The slow attack of preset 1 on taurus 1 makes that sound amazing.
If the attack can be modified on both, then, it’s a toss-up. But I want an original taurus just for that preset. Played with one decades ago and never forgot it.
hi
the moog is the basskillersound,
verry hot,my levis jeans are flying, smile
Holy Shit the Taurus 1 sounds sooooooo much better than the T 3. No surprise at all. You just cant top the REAL thing.
power house and another power house WOW!
This is my first time actually watching a demo of the Taurus and I really never had a reference point. However, if the one of the left was the Taurus 3, I actually preferred the tones. The last sound (Reso Bass) sounded close to my ears on both. Awesome instrument.
It is really surprising that Moog does not even try to get the T3 sound close to the T1. Clearly the T1 wins by far! I think Moog just put a Phatty into the case instead of designing the circuitry from scratch. The T1 is the only Moog synth which uses Hz/V instead of the usual V/Oct scheme. And I think this is one of the reasons why the T1 ha such a stable, fat bottom end.
0:23 aaaaaand the Taurus 1 already wins.
I used to prefer the sound of the Taurus 1, but really I love them both and would be ecstatic if I could get my hands on either one. 😊
BTW, I also wanted to say that this is a great sied-by-side demo.
Es realmente un privilegio obtener uno de estos
Aquí se ve la tecnología musical en aquellos tiempos de los 70’s 80’s
y como para alegranos material usado para Rock Progresivo
Yes the Taurus 1 shall rule them all and in the oscillator’s bind them.
Taurus 1 wins
The winner here is hands down> Taurus1 without a doubt. Why Moog couldn’t create a modern duplicate baffles me, being they have all the schematics. Has to be the components used back in the 70’s, yes?
Any way to use a dummy plug type method to overdrive the T3 like they do on the voyager to get a better OSC sound? Is the T3s "problem" that its too in tune and not producing enough raw harmonic content. Not a real issue as there plenty of things to do to tweak the thing or patch it through to get what you’d want. Can’t please everyone.. super in tune or super vibey.
I got a studiologic MP-117 foot pedalboard. I have it connect to a Roldand V-combo Vr-09. I keep getting a error message Midi buffer full. Can any one help the two companies have not been able to help me so far.
sorry it is a 24 button switcher in cludec bank up down and edit store on both side lcd/ued screen
Does anybody know where you can buy replacement Taurus 1 pedal parts? I mean the actual "foot keys" you step on to trigger the synth. I have a Taurus 1 and one of the pedals is cracked off …
@AlainHubert I absolutely concur. Back in the days when the T3 was released, there was so much hype that this opinion was trashed by anybody supporting the T3 project. None of the new Moogs sound defined, they are all muffled. I own an original Musonics Minimoog and it destroyed a Voyager sonicwise in a second. Even a Taurus II/Rogue sounds better than any Phatty – I was a long time Taurus II user. The current Moog company is so based in hype it’s sickening.
Wow, that original Taurus was in a league of it’s own. Powerful with personality.
The original unit sounds compressed. I think I like the new unit a little better. Plus it has a lot of cool other features.
I like the brightness of the Taurus 3 … isn’t anykind of synth supposed to sound different after being used 33 years ?
@retrosound72 & @MagellanOfBas:
I would assume there are more factors than just the units respective engines… the output on the T3 could be different and more modern… which could be an issue with impedance differences or gain differences, etc.
Question, what output are you using on the T3? the Hi or Lo impedance?
I still have yet to hear any instrument that matches the amount of bottom end that comes from the Taurus 1s!
Well I have to say I prefer the T1 by a country mile
I have to say the Taurus 1 still sounds the fattest.
Taurus 3 clearly wins.
@*****: you should consider calibrating your Taurus 1. My very well looked after and always calibrated Taurus 1 sounds EXACTLY like my new Taurus 3. You should also do a new comparison afterwards and adjust the loudness more accurate. Besides this: the Taurus 1 example is distorting – due to (digital?) overload as you can hopefully hear. I first thought it was my speaker that distorted but you can hear that dirt on every speaker…
"Caustic Bassline" The fattest bass I’ve ever heard. Youtube it. It’s part of the "Caustic vitrual musical workstation"
I think Cyril Lance (Moog Music’s chief engineer) should have both his ears examined. There may be some wax in there. I’ve heard him say that he and his team have worked for days in the studio to try to replicate faithfully the sound of the original Taurus 1. I must say that it’s a FAIL. Nothing else sounds like a T1: punchy, aggressive, defined, sizzling. The T3 is mellowed, thinner, blurry, muffled.
They do sound different.
Anybody have a Sound City pedal bass apparatus or know of anyone that has one? Vintage 70’s but damn if I can’t find one…even on the web! Not eBay….not Let Go….nothing. Squat. ??? Are these things that rare?
And if I remember correctly the T1 ran about $4-$500 back in the day & the T3 is what… $3K? WTf???
Well I took the plunge and bought myself a set of T3’s after stupidly selling a set of T1’s back in the late 1980’s. I have run these new ones through a decent sized PA and have to say they still have the same ground shaking effect of the T1’s…….. When you listen to them on a small studio amp they dont sound quite as "dirty" as the T1’s but racked through a few K’s of PA they "feel" lovely…… and that is the point with the Taurus……. you have to feel them!!…….. and you can..
This is a great demo and the original Taurus 1 wins. I tried the 3 when it came out and returned it immediately, it’s just a Phatty rehash and sounds like it has pillows in front of its output. Got a proper Taurus 1 and can’t be happier: Nothing beats up the real thing. Plug it into one of the new light GK bass amps and the rumble will sound so clear it’s unbelievable.
This sounds awesome! The beginning sounds like the Mass Effect jawn
Glad I’m an owner of the Original. I need to get it out this summer and reintroduce it to the neighbors.
@AlainHubert I think it also has to do with the availability of components as time passed by. It is interesting to notice how quality of sound degrades listening to the three Tauruses, Probably they sacrificed sound in order to keep oscillator stability. What I criticize is that these T3 pedals bear the name "Taurus", which they’re not. Moog could have called it Aries, Capricorn – whatever, but they knew it wouldn’t sell. On top of that, they added the "faithful replica" hype.. scammy?
hello, Im french and i want to know the price of the Taurus 3, Thanks…
Taurus 1 wins
We only want it for the classic preset, and the Taurus I has a noticeably slower attack than the 3, and much more swirly modulation.
yellow wood one
Reso bass sounds very much like tom sawyer!
@drkam6 A couple of weeks ago, I went to my best friend’s house with my 1975 Minimoog. We directly compared it to his Voyager Old School. We came to the same conclusion. The Minimoog’s waveforms are much crispier, more defined in the high frequency range. The Voyager’s continuously variable waveforms are its downfall. Even the simple triangle wave is sharper on the Mini. Even the filter has more character, tending to sync to the input signal when slightly overdriven. The OS filters are bland.
