Marlin Model 43 Shotgun Full Breakdown

Marlin Model 43 Shotgun Full Breakdown

Please forgive my use of wrong terminology for the various parts and components. I was quite sick when I made this video. I wasn’t able to find much info on this gun so I decided to create some info for the next guy. I hope this helps someone.

I have the 44 model of this shotgun (the 20 ga). I took the entire thing apart the same way you showed and cleaned/oiled it nicely. Seems very smooth now that I’ve done that. Mine also had the wooden dowel in the magazine tube to limit to 2+1. My magazine tube only holds 4 shells in total. Also, does your safety switch only work when the pump is back? That seems to be how mine is. Thanks for the help.

I have had this pump in a box taken apart for 3 years. I got it in a multi gun swap with a buddy who had no idea what it was. It needed attention and I am a pro gun guy (sarcasm and self loathing) so I tore it apart one night and started scrubbing parts. I spent countless nights trying to put it back together to no avail. Fast forward three years to tonight… you are a damn genius sir. Tip of the hat to you and many thanks!

    Very well done!

Thank goodness! I just acquired one from an old shooter that had the side plate off. I had suggested he put it back together, but that never happened. He did know where the plate and screws were. He then offered it to me at what I thought was a very cheap price. I’ve been taking guns apart and reassembling them for half a century. After an hour, I gave up and hit the computer. Looks like I struck gold!
I did it! You deserve a YouTube Tony Award. It is back together. The hammer should be cocked when installing.

Thanks for taking the time to produce this video. I have one of these that’s been in my gun safe for years. I could not figure out how to break it down. Thanks again for your efforts.

Having an issue with my shell release button. it keeps slipping and ejecting the shell. Not sure if it’s spring loaded and didn’t see anything about it in this video. Please help.

The thing that was in the magazine tube is a plug. In the state of Minnesota (where i live) there is a law that says you can only have two shells in your gun when your’e duck hunting. That’s why it’s there. Most new pump guns come with them so that you don’t have to make your own.

Marlin Model 31- 20 Ga; I mention that upfront, as these early Marlin shotguns have similarities, but also some small quirks to a particular model. For example, I went install a plug in this model, and after retracting the magazine tube to expose the screw in the bottom hole once the button has latched … I had to release the tube to move it a tiny bit to expose a lock screw that holds the magazine tube screw in place. Think everything is pretty much the same. Thanks for the video that gave me the idea,

THANK YOU. I have a marlin model 26 uses a similar disassembly, I’ve been looking for a proper disassembly video for a long time.

Fantastic video! I just purchased a Model 43 and needed to see the disassembly procedure. Thanks very much!

Hey great video! I have a model 24 and there is no info on that model either. However they are similar enough that I can use your video. I have one question which may sound stupid. However I have never shot this, so I have no clue. In your video, it looks like you can not rack the slide without depressing the slide release. My model 24 when assembled will not rack or eject a dry fire shell without also depressing the slide release button. Is this normal? Do you have to do this with live rounds? Or does the actual recoil somehow replicate pressing the button? Thanks sburkhardt1@hotmail.com

Are these guns worth anything? I have 3 and I want to get rid of one

  21. Matt Wri on July 15, 2022 at 8:11 pm

Do you shoot this very often? If so do you use standard pressure ammo or special low pressure shells like the ones made by RST?

  22. william montanye on July 15, 2022 at 8:11 pm

I recently bought one of these Marlin 43s 12 G, went to shoot it and tried using 2.75 1oz slug shot(required for indoor range, no shot) and i am feeling the firing pin isn’t engaging, i heard if you dry fire this you have to manually reset it and not sure what we are trying to reset?? any ideas?

Wanted to let you know that this also works for the Marlin model 31. Your video was a huge help.

Hello and thank u for the video, do u know if there safe to shoot with modern loads or not i just picked one up and i cant find any detail at all on it.

  26. Craig Loeffen on July 15, 2022 at 8:16 pm

Not sure if anyone has answered your question about the foreign object in the tube magazine, but being a Canadian, I recognize this as a hunting law. Anytime you intend to hunt, the shotgun must hold no more than a total of 3 shells (two in the mag, one in the chamber). If all you intend to do with this is target shoot, or hang on the wall, then you’re fine keeping that plug out. Thanks for the detailed video… I just picked up my Model 43 a few days ago, and this really helps!

    Cheers.

Beautiful gun , what is the value of a gun like this?

  29. Paul Barela on July 15, 2022 at 8:21 pm

Great Video, do happen to know the thread on 60P Magazine Tube Plug, 12 Ga., Outer screws. https://www.gunpartscorp.com/gun-manufacturer/marlinglenfield/shotguns-marlin/43

  30. Shralpinist on July 15, 2022 at 8:26 pm

I recently inherited a Model 43. I know nothing about guns. You mention that this is how you take the gun apart for cleaning. Which parts do you actually clean, and how so?

  31. william montanye on July 15, 2022 at 8:29 pm

i have this exact model not sure year but a serial type number was found just in front of bottom load area..11927 im assuming its 1927?, if not wheres the serial number? and it loads rounds but click and no fire..the more i messed with pump it stopped closing the side side so the pump isn’t engaging.. i saw the little button is a slide release but i push it nothing happens, so the slide is stuck back and open , also lastly anyway to check firing pin and other parts for proper working condition?

  32. On Defence on July 15, 2022 at 8:31 pm

They insert the wood blocker for hunting reasons. Not sure why on a gun this old but I was passed down the 43 and you can only put one she’ll in the mag I think there is a wood blocker in it. And I’m here because I didn’t wanna break it down. But thanks for your help.

  33. william montanye on July 15, 2022 at 8:31 pm

any idea how to check the firing pin whether its broke or stuck?

  34. vettelover2009 on July 15, 2022 at 8:31 pm

the reason the pump forearm won’t come off, is because there is a collar on it underneath
