▪️▪️▪️▪️So we replaced ours in a 2005 buick rendezvous & it came with new lock cylinder and set of keys. The ignition comes on but won’t start we keep getting SECURITY light after the battery light. I’ve tried the ignition on for 10 minutes cycle already. Any other ideas? Thanks for your help! ▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️

This is the most helpful video on GMC lock cylinder, and ignition module, replacement. I used this technique on our 2000 Envoy. No need to take off the steering wheel like other videos propose. Trickiest part is removing the plastic covers on the steering column. There are two torq screws accessible from the bottom. Take those out, remove the steering column adjustment lever (I used pliers for a firm grip, and pull straight out) then using flat head screwdrivers push & pull on the bottom column cover to remove. Swearing helps. Once it’s removed, there is a reverse torq screw holding the top cover in place. I used a small socket that fit, the screw is not in real tight. Then the top cover can be pushed and pulled till it’s off. Remember to disconnect the battery. Once covers are off, simply follow the directions in the video to take out the lock cylinder. If the key & cylinder won’t rotate, there is a small bronze-coloured tab below the cylinder you can push in and the key will turn to the crank position (I got this off another YouTube video—on the Envoy, with the steering column cover on, there is a small access tab on the lower right side of the cover [at about 4 o’clock when facing the steering wheel] which can be easily popped off to allow a plastic prod to be pushed in to compress the tab. Without the column covers on, you can push the tab with your finger.) The ignition module could also be switched out if needed, it is accessible with the covers removed-again, no need to remove the steering wheel. Thanks for the great video, saved me time working in 28 degree cold. I knew it had to be easier than taking off the steering wheel, a few years ago the key in our 1998 Jeep would not turn, our local mechanics came over, towed the car to their shop and were back with a working cylinder in about 1/2 hour. They must have used some version of the technique outlined in this video.

so how do you replace one if the lock won’t turn to the crank position ?
sht worked fine one min next it left the starter cranking then once i got it to turn back the key is still locked in the cylinder and it will not turn far enough to crank now ..

  10. Brandon Pugmire on May 17, 2023 at 4:30 am

what about the new key not matching for the doors?

  11. kenman1717 on May 17, 2023 at 4:34 am

have done lots of these, and one of the big reasons they need to be replaced is they won’t turn. its fine and good that it has to be in that forward position to release the tap, but when it doesn’t turn, you grab it with a pair of channel locks and turn it, all the guts of the cylinder break, but its in the forward position, release the tab, it comes out, there’s usually no damage to the housing, sometimes a bit of a scuff mark on the outside of the hole from the pliers, but just put new coded cylinder in and put it back together. sounds simple enough, but you need to get a good bite on the outside of the cylinder so it will turn, or else it slips, and sometimes can make more work for your self, if you break the outside of the cylinder off.

  14. Standard Brand on May 17, 2023 at 4:37 am

Thanks for all the comments. Unfortunately without being in front of the vehicle we can’t give specific advice. If you are having trouble we recommend you take your vehicle to your local repair shop. You don’t want to risk causing further damage. Thanks again!

  27. SAXONWARLORD1000AD on May 17, 2023 at 4:54 am

I HAD TO STICK A LARGE FLAT BLADE SCREWDRIVER DOWN INSIDE THE HOUSING TO ALIGN THE BOTTOM SECTION SO MY NEW CYLINDER WOULD DROP INTO PLACE

  28. Michael Quintero on May 17, 2023 at 4:56 am

For those that are still wondering how to change the cylinder if you cannot turn the key, you do not have to force it or break it!
There is a small detent on the outer ring, justnear the bottom facing the driver.  A simple screwdriver or pick inserted there will allow you to compress the cylinder ring and slip past the pins.  Then, when its in the ON position, the rest of the process to change the cylinder is quite simple.
I have AAA and called out the locksmith because I could NOT turn the key at all, even after removing the cowlings and trying lubrication, etc.
The locksmith sat down and in 5 seconds had the truck running.  We changed the cylinder at this point and its all good.

FWIW, the AAA membership saved my backside, and that ONE covered event paid for the whole service for a year.  Not that I am selling AAA or anything like that, but its worth the investment to me.  Now I know how, I am unlikely to ever need to do this again, because the new cylinder will outlive my 2002 Chevy.

Good luck to anyone who finds this post helpful, or is in need of this information!

  29. anna dees on May 17, 2023 at 4:56 am

  36. Voiceofreason on May 17, 2023 at 5:05 am

    That’s it?! That’s literally like a 15 minute fix.

  37. John g on May 17, 2023 at 5:05 am

to remove shroud, remove two t20 from bottom. remove bottom half. there’s an inverted torx in front of the ignition switch. it holds the top half of the shroud down. I used a 4mm socket to remove that. then tilt the wheel all the way down and fight the top shroud off.

  44. David Hughes on May 17, 2023 at 5:13 am

Hello, My name is David. I really need some help. I have a 99 Suburban 1500 4wd. The security light was on for a few weeks but there was no problems. I left the lights on, battery went dead, I jumped it to start it but all it does now is start for a half second and shuts down.   had a couple look at it and they say its the factory security system.    Any thoughts or advice on this would be greatly appreciated..
