How to Carry a Knife for Self Defense | Tactical Rifleman

In this video, Chad takes us through an often over-looked step in knife fighting. Just like shooting, where most people only practice from the “Ready” position, the most over-looked step is the Draw. Knowing this is half the battle. Now, the other half is you having the discipline to practice and develop the ‘muscle memory” to push this skill into your subconscious thought. You can watch videos all you want, but if you aren’t getting your butt off the couch and practicing, you aren’t going to be worth a shit at the moment of truth. Decide what type of knife you are going to carry. Then, practice getting it into the fight.

The reality is…most guys who carry folding knives do so as a part of their EDC "kit". It’s a "fashion accessory" to them. Just as is their pistol (if their licensed to CC as a civilian. EDC guys are also mostly "John Wick wannabees". To commit to a lige/death knife fight is easier to imagine than DO. Very few carry knives with the intention to ever use one against another person. Few could actually stab or cut another human…mo matter what. Add…when attacked it’s almost never one on one.

Knife fighters don’t use folders LOL!! IT’s always some fixed blade combat/military knife. Those guys..who carry, in a holster…they’re usually ready to go. Not EDC guys. You don’t want to meet one of them or "rub them the wrong way". They’re more dangerous than someone carrying a gun. They’re on the other guy usually before they know what’s going on. No time to even draw a gun…or knife. And I’m guessing "knife fighters" have been "in it" a few times…and won. Or they wouldn’t be standing there. 🙂

Entertaining on film. Exposure. Best film depicting "knife fighters"…takes place in Brazil and stars Peter Cyote and Amanda Pays. And a Frenchman as the best knife fighter in the film.

You won’t need anything if you live in a nice safe area. I still don’t leave home without a knife though, just because I like having one with me in case I’m away.

  11. MattDaBoneless on December 6, 2021 at 9:21 pm

Knife attacks are so underrated, every one assumes they can take out a knife wielding assailant but in reality the best defense is putting distance between the knife and yourself.

Every male in my immediate family has been stabbed, including me and let me tell you I am much more afraid of a knife then a gun. I have seen someone pull a gun and immediately meet his dead relatives. Watch people’s hands and don’t act like a tough guy with people you don’t know. It may be your last testosterone flex.

So what happens when you need to explain to the pigs on y sum dumb fuccckkkeers following me with a empty tank of gas and all you did was ask y r u following me
The piggy pigs take the first call and write the ticket. These 2 kids was a diversion for a drug run and used me as a Ginny pig then called the cops on me
They tried to make me crash my truck into them as soon as it was safe I took off around them

Fixed blades are superior not only as tools and for cooking but also for combat. There are some really comfortable EDC fixed blades on the market and you never have to worry about the lock breaking in the heat of a life and death fight. BladeHQ has entire series on them.

  20. MbisonBalrog on December 6, 2021 at 9:32 pm

The blade can close back in on your fingers. If your opponent gets grip on your knife hand, and struggle ensures, the mechanism, or button can be accidentally pushed/triggered and blade will fold.

  27. The NDstructible1 on December 6, 2021 at 9:41 pm

For me a fighting knife means you have training if not I suggest 1 or 2 types at the moment TWP and Colonel Blades fix blade or pocket knife if you are not a normal carry/user of knives or you don’t have great mechanics. I suggest always go fixed blade and for me Colonel Blade is the way to go. If you can throw a punch you can use it. It removed mechanical failure and your lack of mechanics ie training. Next Karambits and Folder should be used by practitioners who have some level of training and competence this is more for Karambit because both Colonel Blades has a folder as does a YouTuber in John Lovell with the WPS Fox Folder. Another type I don’t just recommend because it lack finger protection like Colonel Blades LowVZ. This is the KaBar TDI and knives like it these are the knives I carry most for self defense. I like the egg shape handle. With the Clinch Pick/TDI/MF-CEO the grips are great I just would suggest a knife like the Colonel Blades for those with 0 experience is self defense training with blades. Something I almost forgot is push daggers. These are good just not legal in some states being double edged. Some knives you need training traditional knives while useful you need to learn how to use. These are in both folder and fixed blades. Things like TOPS Rapid Strike/SURVIVE! Knives TSK are they are great with training but not very useful for most. Now for the real truth and that is most people do not carry a knife dedicated for self defense. Most carry a Benchmade 940-2 or Bugout, Spyderco Paramilitary or Para3, maybe a few carry a Emerson CQC-15 or CQC-7 or a Super Commander. More than likely people on a budget are carrying a OKC RAT or Kershaw Emerson CQC-6K or KaBar Dozier or Buck 110/112. Yes some may Carry QC or CRK or Microtech or ProTech or Strider or Hinderer or TRM but at the end of the day the knife for them isn’t for self defense. I don’t mean it can’t be but it is a EDC blade for opening boxes and or opening letters and mail. I carry more knives than most. I carry typically a primary EDC like Para3, Bugout, Sebenza, Ray Laconico, Chavez or Pena all great but not really a self defense knife. I carry what I call break room knife. This is your LionSteel Bestman and Brewlow, I have some Case Barlows and GEC knives for this role. These are traditional style knives that don’t freak people out. The next is a hidden knife that is my only true EDC knife and that is a SOG brass key knife this knife is my letter opener. The last is my self defense knife and it isn’t used for anything else. I have a Colonel Blades LowVZ, MF-CEO, Ban Tang Clinch Pick, Bradford Guardian3.5 Tanto, Bark River Ghost II and soon to have a Survive! TSK. If I can not carry knives for different roles I carry something like Emerson CQC-15 or CQC-7 or Microtech Combat Troodon

    Nice video!!
I proudly own a pair of Kershaw 1960ST folding assisted opening pocket knife. Small but quite intimidating.
There is only one real way to carry an edc folding opening assisted pocket knife:
Open it. If it doesn’t work as a deterrant against an offender….
Run as fast as you can.
If it doesn’t work… stab and run. Shure it will deliver a message.

  31. Seppuku Sushi on December 6, 2021 at 9:49 pm

Just get a small fixed blade and scout carry. Why fumble with an extra step?

  32. Dolorian o on December 6, 2021 at 9:50 pm

I do believe walking around with a knife in the pocket is illeagal

  33. YourDailyViewer on December 6, 2021 at 9:50 pm

Why am I even watching this right now😂 There’s been alot of cases about a group of people beating up someone who got in a difficult situation with them. My dad once walked in a pub with his sister and a group of guys wanted to start a fight with him. He got lucky cause his friend showed up and kicked their asses. I’m skinny, not strong, not a good fighter, not fast and I don’t have alot of endurance. So if I got into a fight with a group of people i’d be screwed. I wouldn’t be able to fight them, nore run away but if I pulled out a knife that could scare them. Of course if they had knives of their own i’d be totally screwed. But anyway if I got into a fight, a weapon would be the best thing for me

Don’t buy a cheap knife if you can afford a good one and take lessons. I have seen an Emerson go down. Understand that you will get cut in a fight.

  37. Kaswyn Untamed on December 6, 2021 at 9:55 pm

Carry and train with gun, knife and pepper spray which is good for nonlethal defense. At 30 ft if your gun isn’t drawn yet, knife wins 9/10 times.

  38. William Taylor on December 6, 2021 at 9:56 pm

I have learned that the only acceptable knife for self defense is a fixed blade and no longer carry folders. A spyderco folder almost got me killed.

  39. CLOUD NINE on December 6, 2021 at 9:56 pm

Anyone know what kinda strait blade that was he had? The one with serrations on top it looked like.?

Shooting marbles. yep, got the reference!

  41. T Bone on December 6, 2021 at 9:58 pm

    1. Carry strong side. You can’t do crap normally with your weak hand, much less under duress.
    2. Point up let’s you unfold the knife quickly and or quietly and allow to use a slight flick to assist opening.
Give it a try. Fending someone of with your weak hand and drawing and then repeating with the opposite. Bombai you learn brah!

I’m a lefty, but my right hand is stronger, so trying to push my knife open with my right thumb hurts more than anything.
