Easy On Camera Flash Portraits | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey
Easy On Camera Flash Portraits | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey
There are lots of reasons why attaching a Speedlight to your camera is the best way to work. Maybe you need to work very quickly, perhaps you don’t have access to off-camera flash gear, or possibly there just isn’t the space to set up a flash, softbox, and a light stand.
In this video, photographer Gavin Hoey shares some of his top tips for getting studio-quality portraits using just a bare, on-camera flash. The secret is bouncing the light off a ceiling or wall but as Gavin demonstrates, there’s a bit more to it than you might think and plenty of potential pitfalls to avoid. Unexpected shadows and odd color casts are just two of the problems Gavin covers along the way.
Finally, Gavin finds the smallest space to shoot in his already small home studio. Going “undercover” he shoots something that’s a little different but also almost impossible to do without on-camera flash!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!
What are you using to view the pictures on
This was a great – lighting seems to be so tricky – wish I could have used it last week. Love the last tip. What do you think of LED for Continuous Light Source.
I told my wife I wanted to wrap he in a rug and photograph her………… She threw me out of the house.
Greetings from uganda…..KNOWLEDGE AND INSPIRATION MR GARVEY
Wow love the carpet images. They came out great. Must try that one
Some great techniques, I really like the bouncing off of the wall behind you and I will have to give the carpet roll a try! Thanks Gavin, Chloe and Sam!😀👍🇨🇦
I always enjoy and learn from your videos!
Amazing as always
I dont like the edits. But the real world demonstrations of how the lights bounces are great!
How did you determine to use falsh compensation instead of changing one of the other camera settings?
Great video; one of that type of info, on-camera flash advice, that I’d been looking for. Thanks so much! (love your videos!)
Great, what software you are using to capture the photos on the tablet?
Very interesting and useful ! I’m sure it will help me improve. Thank you !
I absolutely hate how YouTube forces you to use the worst music possible these days.. Still this was what I needed to know for events
Great video but one question – how did you get the catch lights in her eyes when you had flash turned all the way from her (backwards like). Is this something you did in post?
Is that an IPAD that tethering? using Lightroom?
Great video. Gavin where did you been from long times?
Sooooo helpful. Thanks!
Thanks, Gavin and Chloe. I’m imagining shooting a new model, and saying, "Ok, if you’d just lay down on this rug and let me wrap you up in it…." Ha! 🙂
Brilliant as usual Gavin .
Gavin, you could have used a smoke machine on your last shot 😁. All kidding aside, I like the rug shot the most. Very interesting idea Gavin. Thank you!
I have one question.. When you point the flash to the seeling and next you point it to the side wall.. dose it gives the same power or the ttl adjusting it to give high or low power? Even when you point it to the wall at your back dose the ttl calaculating the distance from the subject to give the right power? Sorry im bad on english but hope you understand my question.. thanks for your good lessons 🌹
As always, great photos!
Thanks Dude. You just filled in the gap by demonstrating the answer to all my questions concerning on camera flash. Thanks a million.
Thus was Great💯💥💯💥
great video and an amazing model!! Such a pro!!
Absolutely love the rug photos
You never cease to amaze!
Wow. The exact video I need … Just recently got a flash and been struggling to use it. Thank you
Always loved a Gavin Hoey tuts! Thank you for sharing your skills.
Your model is a real trooper as well as beautiful. The rug sequence of photos was an interesting perspective. Again you have schooled me on the different ways to shoot.
Always awesome 👍
Gavin the light bender magician. Awesome
Thank you Gavin ..
Great job again .. 🙂
This carpet idea looks really amazing! Thank Gavin!
Thanks so much Gavin, brilliant as always. I would like to start shooting teathered. Out of curiosity, what tablet did you use on this shoot? I´ll probably pick up a Tether Tools cable at some point as well as a tablet. Thanks so much for all you do!
But Gavin was using a large modifier. In fact a very nice and much larger modifier than a typical umbrella. He was using his walls and ceiling as large modifies and he got good results from this because he had nice clean white walls and ceiling.
I’ve played with the idea of tethering a tablet during studio portraits. Then I see this video and see you have a set up same as I have been thinking of. Can you make a video showing how to easily set up a tether similar as seen here? Thanks!
Whats the small monitor to see your photo immediately after you take it?
I recently did a shoot in a room that had light-yellow walls. So light-yellow that to my eyes, it didn’t seem like much. But… the resulting images (made with flash bounced off of those walls) were really icky. The subjects’ skin tone turned out orange-ish. Trying to fix it in post was a real problem, too. If I’d had some colored gels to put over the flash head, maybe I could have "corrected" it during the shoot? I’m not sure what color of gel would be called for. Blue? Maybe you could make a video lesson about this. Thank you!
can anyone tell me that yellow cable which connect to the monitor that allows instant photo viewing, it is a hdmi or an usb-c cable ? thanks
Super reminder that flash on camera should not be forgotten. Gavin, when bouncing the flash, was the flash in the "zoom with lens mode" or "manual" and if manual was it one setting?
Thank you very much..
The rug pics were great! Where did you have the flash pointed exactly when you shot these?
Another excellent video Gavin. Informative and succinct as well as entertaining. Thanks.
Another winner ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hi Gavin… you have done a nice simple .. practicle presentation… it clear almost all questions regarding on camra flash..stay blessed
Greetings from southern Indiana, USA! I’m glad to see that you dealt with this. So many times I simply cannot have off camera flash because it is only me and no one else. I’m lucky to have a flash at all.
Could you also go into different modifiers that can be used with the flash on the camera and what seems to work best for you. I’m thinking of the "stofen" that covers the light part of the flash, the rogue flashbender, among others. What do you find seems to work best?
This was so incredibly helpful. I am just getting into on camera flash.
Great info! Thank you both.
By the way, which direction flash was when you were shooting Chloe inside the carpet?
