Classic used Deer rifles for every price

Classic used Deer rifles for every price

One of the best parts of preparing for deer season is the possibility of buying a (nother) rifle. While the new market is all aglow with me fantastic new guns on the market, there are some older gems sitting in used racks. Not only can they be easier on the budget, but sometimes it’s hard to replace that old-fashioned quality. Here are six of our favorite classic deer rifles, all available at the GDC Vault.

There’s a YouTube video 30-30 150gr Remington core lokt penetrate 28in of ballistic gel if that should work on anything in its range.

Wow, she knows her rifles. Excellent presentation and information. I love my pre-64 model 70 in .270 Win.

Good vid and well presented! You are still going to be spending a pretty penny for a 94 or 336 though, or any of these other classic rifles. An even less expensive alternative with near indestructible qualities, and good accuracy would be to look into surplus rifles. Any of the 6.5’s like Carcano 41’s, Arisaka Type 38s or a sporter Swede 96 can still be had for a reasonable price with quality ammo available from several manufacturers.

Even 91/30s can be had relatively cheap still, scoped easily if you wanted an optic and ammo found in quantity.

I used my Weatherby Vanguard in 257 Wby Mag this year. It’s one of my favourites. I also love the lever guns. My favourites are my Winchester 94 ( pre 64) in 32 Win Spl, Marlin 336 in 30-30 and my 1886 in 45-70.

  11. Patriot Rising on January 21, 2022 at 2:15 am

Remington model 700 DM I own in .270 . Great little rifle but suggest anyone who gets one if you can find one. It to purchase a few extra mags. Some have reported issues feeding. I have been lucky with mine. I did get rid of that stupid plastic stock and purchased a new CDL stock and adapted it for the detachable mag.
I own a really super nice early .300 Savage 99. It is a stunner and probably the reason I do not use it for hunting. I actually have not hunted since the early 90’s .
I also own a few other superb rifles. A Huskvarna .300 win mag with a Kahles scope. And a Remingtin 700 LSS . 300 RUM. Several lever actions a Marlin pre saftey 1894 . .44 mag. And a super nice JM Marlin 336 . And have to throw in a Marlin 1895 SBL .
Just so many great rifles around .

1 lever action I would suggest for deer is a Browning BLR. I own one ( steel receiver ) in 7mm-08. Great rifle. . Some opt for the newer Alloy to save a bit on weight. Either way a really nice rifle. On my list for a future purchase is a Henry Long Ranger in 6.5 CM.

  28. R Matteson on January 21, 2022 at 2:33 am

APre64 70 is net cheap! Are you kidding! Take out a second mortgage LOL! On the other hand any Model 70 will prbably be the most accurate rifle one could ever hope to own! I have a 70 Featherweight I bout in 1986. It is so incredidlby accurate it blows my mind! 4 shot grouls at 100 yards from a bench with handloads, or factory loads tha can be covered with a dime are my standard. If I have a dad day, then a nickel and if I am messing around a quarter, with extra room. I have a coule of Mauser 98’s that are great, but the Winnie 70, beats them. I have three AR’s and a Winchester Model 100. None of those can touch that Model 70!

  29. sokodad on January 21, 2022 at 2:34 am

There’s two on your list I don’t have and would love to get yet, the Winchester model 70 and Remington model 700. Not sure why but haven’t bought one yet. I’m a big fan of the Ruger M77 made in early and mid 70’s. I have three of those. Ones I have that are cool is my Savage model 170 pump and my two Remington pumps. One 7600 & other 760. Of all the guns I own, some worth fair amount, my favorite and most dear to me is my model 94 dad gave me for my birthday when I was 16. I used his 1873 my first year hunting with him and then following year he gave me the model 94.

  31. Gage Souther on January 21, 2022 at 2:36 am

I believe you can get a 410 barrel if you have the 22 high power savage model 99

  32. Ray Zavorka on January 21, 2022 at 2:36 am

There are many sporterized Mauser 98’s that are excellent. But… I like lever guns and my 1961 vintage Marlin 336 in 35 Remington is my favorite – Try one especially if you hunt in brush. Still can’t get throught the brush? A 4570 lever gun will!

  33. Yo Holmes on January 21, 2022 at 2:37 am

Great presentation & top notch presentor. Am looking to pick up a great all around big game rifle & this was very informative. Never sleep on old classics.

  34. Hades on January 21, 2022 at 2:39 am

Remington 700 all day. Too bad the people running that company blow.

  35. Patriot Rising on January 21, 2022 at 2:39 am

What about a rifle for a zombie deer? You know from The Walking Deer. Actually I hope they can get this disease under control. Seeing a deer with that illness is a rather sad situation.

Just checked, they are still in business. Competitive prices. Definitely a good collection of used and certified used pieces. Right now, they have the "Summer of Free Shipping." So, you pay tax and they ship free to your nearest FFL and then you pay your transfer fee. My fee in north Texas is 35 dollars per item.
