Canadian Armed Forces Issued Knives

Canadian Armed Forces Issued Knives

This video is about the C5 knife, the Jump Knife and the Gerber MP600 Multi tool I was issued over my 30 years in the Canadian Armed Forces. The C5 knife is the Canadian Forces Clasp Knife #5 made by Camillius. The Jump Knife is the Grohmann DH Russell #3 Army knife. And the Gerber multi tool is the MP600. I also talk about the C5 I was issued made by Peace Target. Hope you like it. This is my first YouTube video.๏ปฟ

I just purchased one C 5 knife 1989 model from a local pawnshop for a dirt cheap price only needing to sharpen the blade for a few minutes on a diamond stone sharpener. I got my money’s worth (It is an excellent knife to hang on a key chain with a fire steel companion) I only wish it had come with the wood saw tool it certainly would rival the Swiss army camper model.

Before the Gerber there was a Canadian Forces "multi tool" that was all steel and was basically a pair of pliers with all the tools folding out of just one of the handles. Total crap.

FYI your Canadian #3 knife is made by Grohmann (not Gorman) of Pictou, Nova Scotia. Check out their website to get your own! Their clearance section has knives at 1/2 price with very minor defects in the handles — some deals to be had there. They use a German carbon steel and their fixed blade knives are rock solid. Bushcraft Canada online also sells Grohmann knives.

Cool stuff! My only Grohmann so far is a number 104, but Iโ€™m eyeing that #3 Army! My boss was a jumper and SAR tech. Any time heโ€™s in the bush, heโ€™s got his jump knife and match safe hanging off his belt. Now I know where and why he got it! Thanks for sharing this.

My Borden, EOD/EDU issue was the leatherman. Wear my "Gumby," trousers to work in the bush each day and my last pair of cut dwn’s for leisure, best workwear and proud to have em. Real CADPAT impossible to get, but searching.

My two kids were issued the black version of the Gerber.

Wow what a walk down memory lane. In 2 Brigade we just called the Jump knives, "Airborne Steak Knives." I’ll have to go and dig it out of a box but I’m sure the C5 I was issued does have the U.S. marking on one side of the scales.๐Ÿ‘

Nice video, I agree with the newer multitools being black, impossible to find if lost in the field. I snapped the knife off mine, but I was issued a metallic not black, I was happy with that lol. Was issued a #3 as a combat engineer, best knife Iโ€™ve used, whether I was cutting det cord, c4 or doing general purpose tasks, it worked flawlessly. Easy to put an edge back on that lasted a long time.

I would assume the Chinese knife was issued because the liberals got elected and care less for Canadians

  20. laurent vilodeau on April 6, 2023 at 3:25 am

041 called it demo knife as well, supposed to be non sparking no 3 is best bush knife around , and the gerber was great for use one handed, issued after my time i bought one with the locks and it served me very well great vid thanks for the memories,,missing pet alot these days ..lol

  21. Twidget on April 6, 2023 at 3:28 am

Thanks for the video. I think that I must have a C5 or civilian equivalent. It has Camillus 1977 stamped on the ricasso of the knife blade. I don’t remember when I bought it but it was probably from a surplus catalog.

  23. JEIIIP68 on April 6, 2023 at 3:29 am

I have been looking for a C5 knife and I am glad I saw this so I can watch out for the knock offs.

Good honest review. Reminded me of a story my father told me. He was in the Swiss Army in WW2, and yes, thsy issued him a Swiss Army Knife! Most if not all of the soldiers kept their issued knife razor sharp and wrapped in an oily rag, taking it out only for inspection. They all bought an identical model and used it for their day to day tasks. Soldiers the world over have their little tricks.

RWestmrR, 1 PPCLI, LER veteran here…. I took a Swiss Army Knife with me (Hiker, IIRC) to Cornwallis, NS Basic Recruit and also carried it with me through Wainwright Battle School. It was small and discreet. We were issued an FNC1A1 Bayonet which hung on our 1964 pattern Web belt or Fighting Order, that bayonet got all the abuse we could give it, while my little red Swiss Army Hiker did the smaller/finer/cleaner tasks in the field. I was also issued a C5 Camillus knife which was paracorded to my wind pants (winter operations) and I used it extensively on winter exercises and my Driver Track course, in the winter luckily….It was able to take the abuse I would not subject my Swiss Army knife to. Since the Queen paid for it, I did not mind turning it back into Clothing Stores when I released/left uniform to attend Undergrad studies at UBC/VCC Langara in Vancouver, BC. These days, I do have a Kydex Kabar 1211 strapped to my hunting stool backpack (yes, the right side as per 1PPCLI SOPs) and for field/bush craft work, I have my Tops BOB to abuse/work with. Peace Be To Journey! Thanks for the great memories!!

The jump knife is known as a hunting knife in the cgcs and used to be issued to the navy as well

  28. TurtleWolf Pack on April 6, 2023 at 3:40 am

No bayonet or SOG Seal Pup? Im not in the forces myself but I know that my friends who are were recently issued a version of the SOG. The Eickhorn bayonet bayonet is also pretty sweet, I managed to legally procure one a few years ago and it is a real workhorse in my gear.

  29. Scenic Driveways on April 6, 2023 at 3:45 am

I thought the U.S. Camillus knife had a sharp steak knife , and the Canadian one came with a dull Butter Knife ? LOL ( Just kidding my friend ) ๐Ÿ™‚

  30. steve c on April 6, 2023 at 3:50 am

Good video Captain…I am an old Ops Sgt so if memory serves……I was working as a combat storesman at CFJSR mid 90’s and remember the C5 being scarce as hens teeth then…I do remember being issued a US one from clothing stores in 94. There was a procurement made of the US ones but they were not the knockoffs. I am not sure it that was a national procurement or something done at base or unit level to meet operational requirements…Also, It was not unusual for troops to head to the local army surplus store to replace missing knives to pass inspections. So it is likely that is the origin of the junk C5. The Gerber came about…and you can thank General McKenzie’s push in response to kit deficiencies, particularly the combat engineers who were in Bosnia….complained the C5 knife was insufficient to their needs when deactivating mines and booby-traps….We also got the Mag-lite flashlight then also…Recommend you bribe a supply tech with their favorite libation as they have means to look up NSNs. Should be able to trace superseded NSNs and equipment through it……

all sad choices, should be LEATHERMAN WAVE. got all you want and so useful. these pieces are best no plastic, all stainless and tougher than hobo shit! no comparison buy US 25 year warreanty. it has been honered with me 2 x so far

The ‘jump knife’ is also known as the ‘field engineer knife’ and standard issue to all Canadian Combat Engineers up until 2016. I love mine, I prefer it over the new issue SOG Seal Pup by far, better steel, better sheath, Canadian designed, etc
