I have used both in the South African Bush War 1978 – 1985. Hands down the FN FAL. The AK is an area weapon, inaccurate fire power.

Do you think the Daniel Defense has Gas operated reliability? I’m looking for a SHTF rifle in 308. I’m stuck between a Vepr 308,DSA FAL,PTR91, or possibly a AR. What scares me from the platform is the un matched reliability compared to other BRs. Although I know DD has a exclusive design does that give it the edge?

Their are a few versions of the FN FAL. In the Australian infantry it was just known as the SLR. And anyone who says that it can be fired on fully Auto effectively is off their heads.
The rifle itself only just takes the 7.62 Nato round on Semi Auto. Turning it fully Auto by manipulating its working parts, the weapon just fires everywhere as the rifle only just takes the round on Semi Auto. And they done a comparison with the AK 47 and the German Sturmgewehr developed late in WW2 by the Germans, and the Sturmgewehr actually stood up well to the AK-47.
Germans are good at developing weapons and everything else. And Anton Kalashnikov , said he was appalled at himself for developing a weapon that was responsible for the death of millions.

FAL: turns cover into concealment – stops jihad, marxism and sociopathy on contact.

A lot of blokes grabbed Argie FN back in 82 but soon discovered, 1 On full auto you could hardly hit a barn door from 20mtrs. And 2. Most Argie soldiers didn’t look after their weapons. Often dirty and damaged. So like me. One quick blat for fun on full auto then disguard for own personal weapon.

I think one on one there is no question which rifle is better… the FN FAL. They are built for quality and with the individual soldier in mind. If you were in some jungle, desert, urban area or whatever setting really, the FN FAL would be the superior weapon to have. It’s far more accurate and has better penetration when shooting at someone in cover. The only down side to the gun in this case is the lack of full auto capability… I don’t understand why the Brits would get rid of it when it can be used effectively for suppressive fire and close quarters engagements. That being said, the AK-47 was made to be cheap, reliable and easy to clean. It works best when you have a lot of low skilled combatants and you want to arm them quickly. I honestly believe that was the primary goal in mind when designing these rifles, given the nature of communism and it’s means of spreading by populism. The guy is right that the rifles are both really good at what they are designed to do, but if you were forced to fight another man to the death and got first pick between these two rifles, I would say the FN FAL is the superior choice. πŸ™‚

    fal all the way

  18. RC Pie on November 20, 2021 at 11:15 pm

THE FN FAL and it’s derivatives are precision instruments, the Kalashnikov is not.

They both fire a very potent cartridge, also 7.62 NATO is likely to be more accurate at range.

Both reliable, any issues would be down to poor ammunition or user error.

But for me, it would have to be the FN FAL, all day long.

Well, they are not comparable, one is a battle rifle and the other is an assault rifle. You use them in a different way.

    There all 7.62

  26. shcbac9914 on November 20, 2021 at 11:22 pm

I’ll take the AK over the FAL and the M14. The US should have adopted the FAL over the M14, but old school battle rifles are a thing of the past. The Russians were very forward thinking with the AK( inspired by the STG 44). The Americans caught up 15 years later with the M16.

When i was in the Kate we had 30 round bren mags that would fit the SLR in the 60s & 70s.

Never had a stoppage with an SLR, not ever. Easy to clean, although the gas plug can take a little more effort

  41. Michael Green Reviews on November 20, 2021 at 11:33 pm

I served 5 years in the British army and had the good fortune to use the L1A1 SLR, and its crappy replacement, the SA80 when newly released (pile of shit). I hear on youtube (usually from the Americans) what a pile of rubbish the SLR was but, I never had a misfire or cycling problem using the British army NATO ammunition. I would also rather miss out on auto fire and have the massive 7.62 against the puny american 5.56mm (which we later adopted). 7.62 shoots through walls, 5.56 bounces off (witnessed it). I did also get the chance to fire the AK… Yes full auto, but again, you need to fire off a full mag to hit anything (Poor accuracy and difficult to keep on target) One or two rounds fired from the semi auto rifle usually hit its mark. I wont mention the SA80….spent more time clearing stoppages than shooting the bloody things!

  42. Kurt Steiner on November 20, 2021 at 11:35 pm

Slur very good rifle, the s a 80 replaced both the s.l.r. d s.m.g. In the UK we had the semi automatic version due to cost and cartridge waste, full autos were prone to jamb in. However the wood stock ones were better than the plastic later versions which tended to split. And barrels could bend with heave beyond usage etc.

  43. George Bozinovski on November 20, 2021 at 11:37 pm

lol no comparison needed. AK47 easily.

  44. Micheal Morton on November 20, 2021 at 11:39 pm

    cool

  45. Stewart W. on November 20, 2021 at 11:42 pm

The FAL was known as the R1 in South Africa and used by the SA Defence Force in combat in South West Africa and Angola etc. Users reported that the additional power of the round meant that whilst the AK rounds would often be deflected by small tree and thorn-bush branches, the R1 would happily send a round right through the trunk of the tree to hit an enemy taking cover.

  46. Emran Ismail on November 20, 2021 at 11:44 pm

FN FAL should have been american gun but they went and made m14(didn’t last very long unlike the FAL. But from the M14 we did get the m4 and m16). If FAL used a smaller bullet(like what NATO is using now with 5.56) it would have less recoil

  47. cuhurun on November 20, 2021 at 11:45 pm

Used to use 30 round LMG mags with the L1A1. The feed-springs were much better in them compared to the L1 standards, which thankfully reduced the infamous 20 round jam problem… which was an all too frequent and seriously annoying problem with many older, overused mags. Other option was to jam no more than 19 rounds in the things, which pretty much solved the issue straight away. Best damned standard issue battle rifle I’ve ever used, loved the old things.

  48. samuraiguy777 on November 20, 2021 at 11:45 pm

I pray one day you’ll have the opportunity to not only fire but owe them both. God bless you and greetings from the USA, where liberty is battered, beaten but still alive, for now.

  49. ConfederceyCSA on November 20, 2021 at 11:46 pm

The AK is a Nice gun well Made very well for combat use, can take alot of beating and fire with the dirtiest ammo, But long range shooting over over 300,400, 500, 600 meters and beyond, the AK is No match for the FN FAL it will reach out and touch you at longer distances and can handle any real world situation with no problems, up close the FAL is a mans guns, A true break the jaw and use of UK Steel in the chest weapon. Best battlefield gun produced, No gun is more loved for it’s weight and power too reach out and give the touch of Death from long distance.

  50. Oscar Delta on November 20, 2021 at 11:48 pm

I assume by your accent that both of the examples shown in the video are deactivated?

I never cared for the FAL, I had one back in the mid 1990’s but got rid of it…

FAL’s are still made in a semi-auto version by DSA in the US…

    https://www.dsarms.com/c-828-rifles.aspx

    I have a G3 and several AKM/AKMS…

You don’t wanna have to carry a FAL or G3 around for a long time, they are heavy compared to modern rifles, ammo is heavier and more expensive as well…
