How to Field Strip a Smith & Wesson Model 59 (459/559/659)
How to Field Strip a Smith & Wesson Model 59 (459/559/659)
Ferrari Steve walks through how to field strip a Smith & Wesson Model 59, which is the same for all Model 59 variants, including the 459, 559, and 659.
Big thanks to my buddy Jeremy for loaning me this piece.
Thanks Steve much!! Work as a firearm cleaning tech, needed to clean a nickel mod 59 today…Didn’t have a clue how to disassemble it!.. Your video was extremely helpful @ work today. Now I’m indoctrinated on how to field-strip this cool gun. Thank you, man!!
Thanks! Just what I wanted.
I purchased a nickel plated model 59 on gunbroker.com for $555.00. It is gorgeous!
Nice video Steve. Couldn’t believe the metal screwdriver though. 59-659 was a great gun way ahead of its time.
those 59s were some decent handguns made by S&W
Can you make a COMPLETE disassembly video of model 459
LLP
Barrel bushing, not lug. Cheers.
Yes that "lever" is part of the magazine disconnect. The EASIEST way to reassemble these S&W guns is to use the slide release/stop pin. Once you depress the ejector then you take the pin and press down on the levers on the right side and the slide simply slides over them. Easy peasy.
Anyone know how to install a missing slide stop button on an S&W 639?
Thanks Steve, my father passed away in December and one of the things he left me in his will was a 659. He could drive nails with the thing, but none of us boys were ever allowed to touch it. He weaned us on Glock’s. I was stuck on trying to figure out how to get the barrel out and then how to re-install the slide. Again thank you. 🙂
You didn’t oil it
Watched your stripdown and found it helpful. I have two of these one of them is brand new still in the box. The other I bought off of a friend who didn’t take good care of it. I’m having a friend ceracote the old gun to improve the finish. Thanks for the vid.
I had a to figure out that little trick with my 659 as well great video there great handguns
how about the 439 ? looks the same, guess I need to go try
Dear Lord THANK YOU! I could NOT for the life of me, get the slide back on because of that magazine safety clip! It’s been a battle for a few days and putting the magazine in and dry firing a few times finally got the safety lever down so I could fully assemble. Thank you for the video!
Thanks. I was trying to put it back together and had the rod guide hooked at the wrong place. Never would have seen that tiny, tiny little notch, if you had not shown it to me.
I had a first year 659 and regret that I sold it just a few years later. I’d love to have it again, but there are other great all SS options out there today. The 659 is a fun range gun. It’s mass allows you to shoot it all day long, but not to carry all day long. Fully loaded it is over 2lbs, which is impractical to carry vs today’s "tactical plastic" options.
Thank you for the video. Have one on layaway at my lgs. Very informative. đź‘Ť
I have a model 59. How can I find out what year it was made?
Thanks!
Oh boy have they become collectable now lmao
Thank you very Much Steve! Very informative, and it helped me with my grandfathers Model 469.
Mine did not want to go back
Why does no one talk about the model 469 Smith & Wesson it is one of the smoothest rating accurate guns I have ever fired and I can find so little on the model 469 12 + 1 it’s just an awesome gun and I see no one talking about it if anyone has any information please get back to me are these guns what’s up with them???
Great đź‘Ť info!
I Paid $5 for mine
Wound up here to learn how to clean my dad’s 59, thanks!
The 59 was horrible and only fixed towards the end. It was the original jammomatic. Your 559 is a great gun. The stainless gun is my favorite 9mm, period. There’s nothing wrong with metal on metal. As my dear old dad used to say, "If it doesn’t work the first time, force it!"
Watching that screwdriver maneuver to coax the pin out… Ahhhh. Cringe. I hope Jeremy doesn’t watch this.
P.S. A Delrin punch from the back side works much better.
That would have been a perfect gun for the cops.
GOOD 639 AND 659 ARE GETTING COLECTABLE THERE RELIBLE AND BUILT LIKE A TANK
I owned a Mod. 59 for a year or so in the late 70’s. When reassembling after stripping/cleaning it, I remember having a terrible time getting the spring guide to sit in that little notch! That (coupled with the fact I wasn’t very accurate with it) sent it on to it’s next owner pretty quickly.
use a round to push the take down pin / slide lock out.
REALLY HELPFUL!! Thank you…
Thank you so much! It’s been 25 years since I’ve pulled this out of its oil cloth and at one point in time I was able to do this blindfolded… It’s amazing how much I forget over the years!
My dad bought a model 59 around 1970 ish. But every time he tried to shoot it it jammed.
It sat in his drawer for 35 years until I inherited it.
I found that it always failed to eject every third shell.
I took it to a renowned gun shop called the Handgunner in Topton, PA.
They loaded a full clip and shot all of them vertically into a pail of sand in back.
Made me feel stupid.
So I found a place near Wind Gap that had a retired Remington Armorer.
They had it for a month.
Fuck that. I went to pick it up, and they had it jam every third shot too, but could not figure it out.
Finally they did. Some dipshit at S&W had slipped and left a half mood size groove near the extractor, and it was enough to hang it up and jam it.
He machined it out and aligned the extractor, now it’s a new gun. Literally. Because my Dad couldn’t shoot it.
But I’ll never buy anything from S&W.
Six years later and your video is still helping folks. Helped me! Great video. 🙂
The strip method is similar with method for model 39 rite?
Thank you, you’re a lifesaver. That little pin/lever was a real pain. The magazine trick worked well. All done in a steel/silver model 659.
Kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of. Let’s all say that over, and over, and over again.
Are there 50 rounds drum to this gun ??
Just helped me field strip my 59
Less talking. Get to the strip down.
Ive had a Model 659 which seems to have a problem with the trigger mechanizm. If I have the safty on an cock the gun it holds off from firing just fine. But, as soon as I let off on the sfty the gun will fire like a fuly automatic. When I pull the trigger it’ll stop firing but as I let go of the trigger it” just fire off as if its fully auto.
What would/ could cause this? Thnkas for any help. Your cleaning video is awesome.
I have the 659 9mm brushed stainless I bought back in the mid 80’s……fired it only one time when I first bought it…just might have to get it out to the range again….
Too dam complicated and looks really heavy
how can I find which guns use the same magazines these days. I know the daewoo dp51 does. looking for others.
Can’t wait to buy one of these ! Pretty dang cheap and there is a bunch for sell !
Takedown starts at 4:20. You’re welcome.
