Uranium Bullets: The A-10 Warthog's Cannon Is A Truly Fearsome Weapon

General Electric’s 30-millimeter GAU-8 Avenger cannon has been the primary weapon of the U.S. Air Force’s A-10 Thunderbolt II ground-attack plane for more than 40 years. It also arms the Goalkeeper naval close-in weapon system. It’s a huge and awesome gun.

The Americans seem to love spraying their nuclear waste on countries they have a dispute with. They seemed very happy with all the devastation and long lasting effects it had on the civilians of Iraq and Kosovo. But let them try that shit on the Russians and see what the response will be. The Russian have said they will treat it as a nuclear attack because that is exactly what it is, a dirty nuclear bomb spread out across many small munitions. Basically a dirty cluster bomb.

Only thing is we don’t fire the uranium depleted bullets. We cracked them out back in 2016 IIRC when we had some A-10’s go after a convoy. 2 planes came back with busted up guns because the bullets blew up in the barrel.

They used to do mountain pass training runs for A-10 squadrons here in the White Mtns of New Hampshire. Nothing quite as cool as sitting on a remote summit as the Warthogs fly in and out of nearby mountain passes.

Neber heard of such a thing, and I am a Mechanical Engineer.

Did he perhaps mean a hydraulic buffer system?

Who in the what write these scripts? A person has to wonder.

In the interim, I remain, scratching me ‘ead.

It fires 3,900 rounds per minute. But it only has 1150 rounds total. … So it goes into battle with around 25 seconds of rounds.

If I was an air force pilot (I’m a civilian pilot) the A-10 would be my first choice aircraft. I love this bird. It’s one of the most important assets in the inventory!

Depleted uranium is strong and very dense metal. So, I imagine that wear on a barrel of the gun is equally bad. How often does a barrel have to be replaced?

  24. Riaan Potgieter on July 15, 2023 at 5:36 am

If you are the enemy and you see the A-10 with a bit of "fog and smoke" it is too late, cause you will not be there to hear the bbbrrrrrttttttttt!! 😁😀

  25. dwmcever on July 15, 2023 at 5:39 am

What the Warthog needs is guided 30mm Cannon rounds or "Guided medium caliber ammunition ". That’s coming down the pipe.

This is a great tool for the battlefields of yesterday.
A real devastating punch if you happen to be in its path.
However its easy prey for some shoulder mounted ground to air systems.

Christian weapon makers need not supply arms to Ukranian Satanists to kill Russian Orthodox Christians. You have the right to refuse service for whatever you want remember? Make them eat a slice of bacon, kiss a crucifix, and declare Jesus the messiah for Christian weapons. Make sure you sabotage as much stuff as you can if you have no choice.

Even to this day Iraqi civilians are suffering cancers and birth defects from all the depleted Uranium sprayed across Iraq during the gulf wars. The same for Kosovo. But they probably deserve it, because they weren’t following "the rules based international order". What do you think ? But I dare them to try that shit on Russia.

  43. Marcel Hagen on July 15, 2023 at 5:55 am

I love all your snappy comments: The A10 is love or hate, but you can’t ignore your feeling. The uranium bullet is a different thing. Firing it creates a cloud of mortal dust. Not only on foes but on your own dear mates as well. Your governement considers these bullets a cheap way to get rid of nuclear waste while killing it’s own folks. They don’t care.
Don’t ever think of your government as protecting it’s own citizens. You are guinnee pigs, bags of money and everything else to be abused. We complain about the China government but meanwhile the US government is not much better. Don’t get me wrong, all americans I met were lovely people.

Does the Uranium emit any radiation? Is the smoke from firing carry any contaminate? I don’t like this "metal" deposits at target.

  50. mikeyb byekim on July 15, 2023 at 6:02 am

1:20 so much money and resources, and brilliant minds spent on development of weapons and systems that could’ve been used more effectively for better living if everyone would just get along. Dam shame, even if the consumer market actually did get a bit of high military tech eventually e.g. GPS n such.
