SHOT Show 2020: The Colt New Python
SHOT Show 2020: The Colt New Python
When Brownells Gun Tech and resident firearm historian Keith Ford shows us a .357 Magnum revolver, we’d be forgiven for assuming we’ve accidentally clicked on an episode of From the Vault. But today he’s on the cutting edge at SHOT Show 2020 where he talks to Justin Baldini from Colt Firearms about the NEW Python revolver. The Python is, of course, one of the most coveted firearms of all time, and more than one wheelgun lover was devastated when Colt discontinued production in the 1990s. The original Python was complex and a tad finicky, but a joy to shoot. Justin explains how the New Python has been upgraded – while still preserving the legendary smoothness of the original. It’s stronger and the mechanicals inside are more robust, so better able to handle full-power .357 Magnum loads. But the new Python is just as beautiful to behold and, according to Justin, rewarding to shoot. Who would have guessed that one of the hottest new items of 2020 would be a double action revolver? Let’s call it the Year of the Python!

“THIS ONE IS GOING TO KEEP US BUSY FOR A WHILE.” Colt Rep. Hopefully making them reliable!
I actually get the sense that this rep isn’t sold on the gun himself. IMO
Great review! The comment about not having the S&W lock on the side (Hillary Hole) was classic!
The Public: Bring back the Python, Bring back the Python, Bring back the Python.
Colt: Brings back the Python..
The Public: Bring back a working Python
Hurray! The Python is finally back. And this time it is going to be simpler (perhaps stronger). 2020 must be a good year.
I’m here to save you $2000. I bought the 2020 python. It’s absolute garbage. I spent almost 2k for a piece of trash. Their customer service is horrible. Don’t buy! I bought the 2nd gen version which supposed to fixed all the problems Hickok45 had. Well more problems along with the existing ones. From missing parts like like see on YouTube and forums to more malfunctions. I hope colt actually go bankrupt and let their old legacy be their legacy.
60% of the time it works everytime…
Unfortunately the rep didn’t address the serious problems that some owners of the new Python have experienced including cylinder failure to turn, light primer strikes and cylinders that are very difficult to open. Hopefully Colt will address these problems quickly and inform the public what exactly they fixed. Otherwise Colt will be flooded with returns and negative reviews. Take a look at the hickok45 review on the new Python. Several others have posted vids showing the same problems.
I really want one of the 6" models!!
But what’s going on?
Are there just a few guns that slipped through with malfunctioning lock work and cylinders that don’t turn??
Is it a poor design?
Poor components?
Inept assembly?
Are there just a few with cosmetic issues that any final Inspectors should have caught and stopped from being shipped?
With just a few guns getting to the street with finish issues, that alone should get Colt to retrain final inseptors.
With YouTube and social media it’s easy for a few bad guns to get a lot of attention.
We probably wouldn’t have heard about it till quite a while longer in the pre- social media days.
So Colt needs to address this Directly.
Print publications like American Handgunner, Guns and Ammo should buy off the shelf models and give them 1000+ round tests.
Also I would like to see Military Arms Channel do a long term test.
He helped expose the problems with Sigs.
I want a Python that I can shoot, that looks good.
Meanwhile my Ruger GP100s are reliable with no flaws.
For $1500 Colt should make a gun that is as reliable and sturdy as a GP100 or a S&W 686
The ball is in Colt’s court.
Cheers
Definitely not “Premium” Spokesman.
the new colt python might be hot but if it dont work right its just high priced junk my thought
Mine was recalled before I even got it I’m sorry I already payed for it
Mine works great. Way better trigger than the old python and makes a S&W just a boat anchor.
Colt rep knocking the ‘old’ Python is laughable, in view of what’s going on with the ‘new’ Colt Python. These people are clueless.
Its not legal in California.
I want a blued steel Python so I can send it in. I’ve contacted Tyler Gun works and they said they’ll case harden a blued steel python for me for 450 dollars. That’s about the markup for the 2020 pythons on gun broker. Can’t do that with a NIB old python because it would be too cost prohibited.
piece of shit…. DO NOT BUY! among all other issues you guys see online, mine came in defective. My Python has the "Gen2" stamps, which means they are supposed to have all the previous issues fixed. unfortunately, mine has some other issues….. I dont even want to talk about it because I am extremely furious right now. I cant believe I spent 1600$ + tax for a piece of crap.
nobody asking the hard question what about the early defects reported
Need this in blue steel as well.
Newest and latest…blooper.
I’m spending my stimulus check on a new Python.
yeah my guns get beat to shit bouncing around in my gunsafe.
I hope to get my hands on one by summer.
I had a 4 inch Python (blued) which I bought second hand back in 1982. It was a fabulous weapon, used it a lot for service pistol matches and put a lot of rounds through it. It never failed to perform and although it was a long time ago it seems to me that the sound the current one makes when firing the action is different, perhaps the transfer bar???? Unfortunately this Python ended up like all my other classic firearms and was surrendered during Australia’s first gun buy back in 1996 when significant changes were made to our gun laws following a horrific event. Now, fast forward to 2020 some of those laws have been relaxed so to speak and I am trying to buy back those firearms I had. I still have the original wooden grips which I took off when I bought it and replaced them with a set of rubberised grips. I have watched a few reviews about this new Python and as expected the Colt reps say nothing about the issues being experienced. What surprises me is that Colt releases an iconic firearm which seems to have intermittent faults, why???? Is it a design issue or an issue that occurs after rounds have been fired. Does anyone know why the cylinder at times fails to revolve? A comment below indicates the cost to be $1,500.00 USD. Here in Australia some dealers are taking pre-orders at just under $2,300.00 USD. I think one aussie dollar is currently buying 62 cents US.
They are having a lot of problems from what I’ve seen. I know it’s a Colt Python but it’s not worth twice the price of an S&W 686. I like Colt and own a couple that I wouldn’t get rid of but the management has made some really bad decisions and rushing these pistols through with poor quality control is just another strike against them.
i want one bad. by the time i get one, all the bugs should be worked out.
Blued would be great🤔
Recalls coming soon?
my question is when does Colt will release a blue one version /
I will get one once the initial teething problems are worked out. To be honest I have only heard of a couple of issues but I have waited this long 6 more months will not be hard. Please Colt bring out a blued version!!!
I used to do S&W and Colt warranty repair in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s. I repaired dozens of Colt Pythons and, literally, hundreds of Detective specials. I also did trigger work on all of them. If you think that all the Pythons were "perfect" you
never had to repair them. From the small amount of new Colts I’ve been able to try, they have absolutely improved the trigger pull and, most notably, greatly diminished the "stacking" that almost all Colt E,I, and D frames had. Should a gun work 100% right out of the box? Of course. Stuff happens. The proof is what the company does to make it right.
the gun don’t work .
Colt 737 super max python
Looks like a nice modern revolver, though with substantially different lockworks perhaps it would be more correct to call it a Python II or Python Gen II….something to differentiate it from the original.
modern junk….
Yeah…he was being totally unbiased…said he was gonna buy one before it had the malfunction
****Recall WARNING****
The "new" $1,500 USD Colt 2020 Python may not be a good one! See video:

Light primer strikes cylinder jam talk more about that
I just bought a island mansion an another planet. But am not going to use them keep them in the safe. Good thing I have a 686 S&W.
I’m interested in one but I’ll wait till they fix all of the problems I’ve been seeing with these Pythons on YouTube. $1500 is a lot of money to spend on a gun that’s prone to malfunction.
I would love to have a new blued 2.5 inch Python to replace the one I foolishly sold years ago.

Unfortunately the python is not a ‘D’ frame.
Do not buy. Many be recalled
CZ to the rescue!
I’m pro colt but how do they leave the factory with blemishes? Not an unknown mechanical problem but a physical blemish you can see with the naked eye.
