Alberta to take control of prosecutions for federally banned firearms: justice minister | FULL

Alberta’s Justice Minister and Solicitor General Tyler Shandro will announce new measures on Thursday to oppose the federal government’s firearms prohibition legislation and the seizure of assault-style weapons.

A federal amendment to Bill C-21 would set out a regulatory ban on what the government calls “assault-style weapons” by putting an evergreen definition for such firearms into law.

It comes after the province passed Bill 1, the Alberta Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act, on Dec. 8. The bill would allow Smith and her cabinet to pursue a more confrontational approach with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government on a range of issues deemed unconstitutional or an overreach in provincial areas of responsibility.

What about a firearm purchased after May 2020 that only made it to the list with the Fall 2022 ammendment but still legal to purchase till Dec 31 2022?

What a surprise- the last question by the CBC or should I say " liberal party propaganda arm", was about the sovreinty act and not the announcement made by the minister.
I’m sure they will edit things to put Justins spin on things for the GTA.
Basically it looks as if you are not using your firearm to commit a crime in Alberta you won’t be charged for owning it if it was legally obtained.
What the hell is the issue with that??

This doesn’t mean anything, firearms offenses are handled under the criminal code, which the Alberta crown is ALREADY in charge of prosecuting cases, and not the fire arms act… so this wouldn’t change anything should bill c21 go into effect. Please watch Runkle of the Baily video on this he’s a firearms lawyer and very much anti bill c21 but even he says that he’s concerned with this move by Alberta as it either shows a lack of understanding of the the law and how it works by the Alberta legislators or that its just a publicity stunt. I really do hope that bill c21 doest go through but this doesn’t seem to me like it will do anything to prevent it from going through!

That’s not true about it being political against western provinces. I live in southern Ontario and have been around guns and hunters all my life. Northern Ontario along with eastern provinces also have high number of gun owners

How do we Nova Scotia’s get in line with Alberta.

  25. Learysinsight on March 26, 2023 at 3:13 am

The OIC was unlawfully used during a fake emergency. This is still a grab of the public’s property of possessions that were in that order. The Alberta gov’t should protect against that OIC AS WELL!!

    Go Alberta!

  27. Philippe deRepentigny on March 26, 2023 at 3:14 am

  35. Tom Matty on March 26, 2023 at 3:26 am

Well, this will likely be on its way to the Supreme Court. Good. The average person cannot afford these important battles to test and limit federal powers. It is good that local governments, aligned with the attitudes of community, steps up amd battles these. Well done Alberta. Now im off to get popcorn amd see the Federal government response.

  36. Frank Slide on March 26, 2023 at 3:26 am

Danielle Smith needs to use part of Alberta’s surplus to offer free plane tickets to Canadians who wish to visit Alberta. This would expose how the Liberal Govt has perpetuated false stereotypes and prejudice against Alberta.

  37. Chris Bernard on March 26, 2023 at 3:27 am

Good for you Albertans. I wish the Manitoba government would do the same for us. All Canadians need help against this tyrannical federal government.

Marijuana was legalized under the auspice that people have the right to engage in an activity that other people do not approve . As long as the individual who uses marijuana does not hurt anyone, its no one else’s business. Marijuana legalization was a welcome affront to those who do not partake themselves and yet are quick to judge others and formulate what if scenarios that are off-base from reality.
Today, the same rules do not apply to firearms owners. The Federal Govt wants to criminalize those who have legally obtained firearms. People who do not hurt anyone, will have to surrender their private property to the state because there are others who do not like guns. The legal firearm owner are not a risk to society – this is a real fact.
