M&P-15 Sport: Iron Sight Zero

M&P-15 Sport: Iron Sight Zero

How to zero iron sights on a semi-automatic, AR-style rifle. Originally lensed in October, 2014 after the purchase of my first civilian rifle following 23-years as a combat Soldier. I put my military experience behind the instruction but, please excuse the sometimes rambling host. I had several “TBI moments” where my memory lapsed in mid-sentence. It’s all there, though. I hope you get something out of it.

I’ve been avoiding the whole firearms thing as I feel it’s in the domain of others like NutnFancy, Sootch, and every other YouTuber trying to be cool. Firearms are done to death on YouTube, so I avoided putting this together for 2 years. Now that it’s a thing, an official episode, I feel it’s surprisingly relevant for the beginning marksman. Suffice to say, it’s not your normal how-to.

For me, this project allowed me to put my Sony cameras and Canon FD lenses through their paces. I wanted this piece to have a big movie feel to it. I think I achieved that towards the second half of the piece. It also was the first project where I did an entire sound mix in Adobe Audition. I learned a lot on this one.

A Sony A6000 was my A-camera and a Sony NEX-5N was my B-camera. Shitty sound was captured using a Zoom H1, which needed major sweetening in Adobe Audition CC. Surprisingly, the tiny wind sock eliminated a ton of wind compared to the on-camera mics.

The movie was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015 and includes some After Effects work. Color was through Premiere using Fast Color Corrector and Lumetri Color, specifically, REDLOGFILM – SL – PROFILE. I liked how it turned out.

So with the gun like that we cannot have a reflex sight and also the two iron sights because it would be too small what would be due for this?

This is a really well produced video, came for just how to adjust the MBUS and you actually gave me some pointers I’ve never heard before. Appreciate you.

Four years later and this still helps to refresh zeroing for the apocalypse. Thanks buddy.

Stop using that tool to push the mag. release. In a real under pressure situation you’ll be searching for that silly tool… USE YOUR FINGER OR THUMB, not some dumb ass tool, it could get you killed!

Clean it? Seriously? I just got it 2 hours ago!

This video is well done…strong work. I like the quality of the video too. As a fellow vet, I appreciate you bringing your experience to the plate, unlike many of those ate up wannabes who post a ton of (useful?) shit on YouTube. Your respect for the weapon and for safety is evident.

Very good video. Where did you find the M4 target that tells you how many clicks to move your sight?

Thanks for putting this together, very informative for me. I bought a M&P 15 two weeks ago and with 1 holiday past me I’m ready to shoot this rifle.
My question is where/how to set up a spot on my property. I’ve got plenty of room pasture wise but the layout of neighboring properties seems to necessitate situating myself at the rear of the property in the woods due to a large wooded uninhabited property back behind me.
Should I set up a bench to fire off instead of going prone?

Great zeroing video! What’s that you have to do in order to eject the magazine? Some more CA regulation to make it harder to defend yourself? 😕

  20. Rinaldo Catria on October 6, 2022 at 9:25 pm

If you had not moved the sights to begin with, you’d have been shooting right on.

  21. Kevin Brown on October 6, 2022 at 9:30 pm

Nice video. Sucks you’re in calicommunist . What’s up with the bullet mag release?

  22. Charles Ludwig on October 6, 2022 at 9:30 pm

And even when zeroed for a 300 meter BSZ as you demonstrated the novice shooter still does not understand MOA and thus when shooting in wind at distance the shooter will not know how to apply MOA wind formula, if the shooter ever becomes acquainted with that means to know what to do about wind. It’s why I never train civilian novice shooters using the military sight-in target, which requires no understanding of sight movement in MOA.Instead I have shooters shoot at 200 yard military bull reduced for 100 yards at 25 meters. The bull is big enough for shooter to understand consistent sight picture. Then need for sight adjustment is determined from shooter application of MOA formula. Of course the military sight-in target is doctrine and is proper but must be accompanied with MOA instruction. Creds: CMP-USAMU cert. MRI assisting USAMU deliver SDM, TTT, and SAFS.

I thought S&W bore sights these guns in at the factory. Why are you moving the sights to begin with?
